She checked in under a fake name. She checked out with a whole new life.

At fifty, Vivian Laurent has built a luxury-hotel empire, survived a public divorce, and perfected the art of never needing anyone.

When guest satisfaction at her newest coastal resort drops without explanation, Vivian checks in under a fake name to investigate. No assistants. No board members. No Laurent on the reservation.

Then she meets Jules Mercado — the resort’s cocktail director. Thirty-two. Relentlessly charming. And entirely too good at noticing when a woman is pretending she doesn’t want to be touched.

Jules thinks Vivian is a gorgeous, guarded divorcee on holiday. Vivian thinks she can survive one anonymous week of temptation.

They’re both wrong.

Because the minibar isn’t the only thing in that suite that’s dangerously overstocked — and checkout was supposed to be simple.

Chapter One: The Woman Who Runs Everything

The pad thai was twelve dollars. The fork I was eating it with cost nine hundred.

I noticed things like that now. Not because I’d suddenly developed a conscience about wealth — I’d been rich long enough for that particular discomfort to calcify into something more manageable — but because noticing the wrong details at two in the morning was what happened when you couldn’t sleep and didn’t have anyone to call about it.

The Christofle fork was a gift from a designer who’d furnished our — my — penthouse office three years ago. The pad thai was from a place on Ninth Avenue that didn’t ask questions when a woman in a $400 blouse ordered delivery at midnight on a Tuesday. I ate standing at my desk because the dining table in the next room sat eight and I hadn’t used it since the divorce, and something about sitting at the head of an empty table for one felt like a confession I wasn’t ready to make.

On my screen, the numbers were doing something they shouldn’t have been doing.

Laurent Coast — my resort, my vision, the property I’d fought the board for two years to build — was bleeding. Not financially. The financials were adequate, if uninspired. The bleeding was subtler than that, the kind of wound that didn’t show up on a balance sheet until it was too late to suture.

I pulled up the guest satisfaction dashboard and scrolled through the last quarter’s data for the third time that night. The aggregates looked acceptable if you squinted. Eighty-one percent satisfaction, which would’ve been respectable for any mid-tier brand. But Laurent wasn’t mid-tier. Eighty-one percent was a fire alarm nobody was hearing.

I clicked into the verbatim comments and read them again, chewing cold noodles off my absurd fork.

Beautiful property. Felt oddly impersonal.

Gorgeous resort but it felt like nobody was really there. Like a movie set.

We kept waiting for the experience to start. It never quite did.

The comments weren’t angry. That was what made them devastating. These guests weren’t angry. They were indifferent. They’d stayed at a property I’d designed to make people feel seen, and they’d left feeling like they’d visited a beautiful building where no one was home.

My phone buzzed. The board’s group thread was active. Gavin, naturally. My ex-husband had many gifts, but knowing when to stop talking had never been one of them. By the time I’d finished reading his message about replacing the entire management team, I’d made a decision.

I was going to the resort. Alone. Under a name that wasn’t mine.

I pulled up the reservation system. One oceanfront suite, seven nights. Guest name: Lena Lane.

It was reckless, and I was doing it anyway.

My hand stopped on a nightgown at the back of the drawer. Ivory silk, French lace at the neckline. I’d ordered it six months ago and never worn it, because there was no one to wear it for. I packed it anyway. I didn’t examine why.

I caught my reflection in the hallway mirror. Fifty years old. Silver coming in at the temples. A face that was handsome rather than pretty. I looked like a woman whose life was going well.

I looked like a liar.

My phone buzzed one last time. Sofia. Mom, when’s the last time you did something just because you wanted to?

I didn’t answer. I picked up my suitcase and took the elevator down to a car that would take me to a resort where no one knew my name.

Seven days. Find the problem. Fix the problem. Go home.

I was very good at not thinking about things. I’d had a lot of practice.
