She wrote a list of everything she was afraid to want. Her best friend was every item.

Delphine Rowe has spent her life arranging other people’s perfect choices. The night she ends her respectable, sexless engagement, she writes an unfiltered list of experiences she’s denied herself — from buying a toy without blushing to kissing a woman and asking directly for pleasure.

Her openly lesbian best friend, queer bookstore owner Zadie Cole, has loved her for seven years and reluctantly agrees to help with the harmless items. She draws one firm boundary: she will not sleep with Delphine merely to satisfy a curiosity checkbox.

Then a celebrity wedding collapses and leaves Delphine’s firm facing ruin. Delphine proposes converting the paid-for venue into Unbridled — a women-centered romance, pleasure, and self-ownership festival — with Zadie as creative partner. Building the event together turns lessons into kisses and kisses into an arrangement neither woman can keep casual.

When Delphine’s private list is exposed and her employer markets her awakening as part of the festival, she must stop letting other people define her desires — and prove to Zadie that she is not the last task on a list but the first choice in Delphine’s unscripted life.

Chapter One: Something Borrowed, Nothing Wanted

The mother of the bride was going to be a problem.

I spotted her through the atrium doors at 4:47 PM — thirteen minutes before the ceremony — holding a champagne flute at a tilt that said third glass and cornering the string quartet’s cellist about tempo. The cellist looked like a woman considering vehicular homicide. Valid.

“Pri.” I touched my headset. “Helen Ashworth is about to conduct ‘Canon in D’ with a Veuve Clicquot baton. Intercept, redirect, and for the love of God, get her a canapé.”

“On it. Also, the florist is crying in the coat check.”

“Which florist?”

“The one who didn’t make the centerpiece changes you asked for at six this morning.”

“She’s crying because she made them and they’re gorgeous, or she’s crying because she didn’t and she knows I’ll notice?”

“Door number two.”

I closed my eyes for exactly one second. One second was all I ever allowed. Then I crossed the atrium in heels I’d been wearing for nine hours, my hair escaping its pins in slow revolt, and went to explain to a weeping florist that swapping the ranunculus for garden roses wasn’t a creative insult — it was a color correction that would save her arrangement from looking like a Pepto-Bismol ad in every photograph the bride’s seventy thousand Instagram followers would post tonight.

The florist stopped crying. The centerpieces got fixed. The cellist survived.

This is what I do.

My name is Delphine Rowe, and I am very, very good at making other people’s most important days look effortless. I’m a senior event producer at Gilded Hour, the premier luxury event firm in the Finger Lakes, which means I’m paid to anticipate catastrophe, neutralize it before anyone notices, and smile while my feet bleed.

Zadie arrived forty-three minutes later with two containers of pho from Lien’s, a bottle of wine she didn’t open, and the specific silence that meant she already knew.

She didn’t knock. She had a key. She’d had a key for five years.

“I brought pho,” she said from the doorway. “And before you say you’re not hungry, I’m going to remind you that you’ve been upright for fourteen hours and I’ve known you long enough to recognize when you’re running on cortisol and sheer aesthetic willpower.”

She sat on the kitchen floor next to me, her back against the cabinet, close enough that our shoulders touched.

“Tell me,” she said.

“I ended it.”

“I know.”

“I’m not sad.”

“I know that too.”

“Shouldn’t I be sad?”

She reached up with her other hand and started pulling the pins out of my hair. One by one, carefully, the way you’d disarm something. My hair fell in stages — first one side, then the twist at the crown, then the rest of it, heavy and dark, against my shoulders. Each pin she removed felt like a piece of armor coming off.

My breath caught.

She retrieved a notebook from her bag. A simple black Moleskine. She set it on the table where the seating binder had been.

“What’s this for?” I asked.

“You said you don’t know what you want. I don’t believe you, but I think you need to hear yourself say it. So.” She tapped the cover. “Start with everything you were afraid to want.”

I pressed two fingers to my pulse.

It was racing.
