She asked for a practice girlfriend. She forgot to practice not falling in love.

After admitting she wants women, relentlessly romantic event florist Tilly Vane asks her lesbian best friend, Greer Halston, to be her practice girlfriend — take her on fake dates, teach her how to flirt, show her what it feels like to be with a woman — before Tilly tries sapphic dating for real.

Greer has secretly loved Tilly for nine years. She agrees because refusing would expose everything.

The practice starts innocent. It doesn’t stay that way.

Their first practice kiss turns hungry. Their first practice sleepover turns sexual. Every “practice” scenario combusts into something that feels nothing like rehearsal, and Tilly stops being able to tell the difference between learning and wanting. Meanwhile, the celebrity wedding that could save Tilly’s floral studio depends on a floating garden only Greer’s climbing expertise can engineer — locking them into professional proximity while their personal boundaries collapse.

Greer set one rule above all the others: if it stops feeling like practice, say so. Neither woman says a word.

Chapter One: The Impossible Ceiling

The Larkspur Conservatory smells like old iron and money.

I’m standing beneath a hundred and forty years of glass and Victorian metalwork, pitching the most ambitious floral installation of my career to a woman who looks like she’s already decided I can’t deliver it, and I cannot stop looking at the ceiling.

It’s extraordinary. Curved iron ribs arch sixty feet overhead, holding thousands of panes that turn the late-April sky into something fractured and luminous. The light in here is alive — it shifts every time a cloud passes, dappling the stone floor with shadows that move like water. Every surface is either glass, iron, or worn limestone. No color. No softness. The space is begging for flowers the way a cathedral is begging for a choir, and I have never wanted anything more than to give this room what it’s missing.

“The concept is a suspended living canopy,” I say, keeping my voice steady while my heart jackhammers behind my ribs. “White climbing roses, green hellebore, jasmine, trailing ivy, and approximately three hundred hand-blown glass leaves to catch the light. From below, it will look like a garden floating overhead. The ceremony happens beneath it. The guests look up and see a sky made of flowers.”

Helena March, executive wedding producer and the kind of woman who makes you check whether your shirt is tucked in, studies my mood board without expression.

“The conservatory forbids permanent anchors,” she says. “No drilling. No adhesives on the ironwork. No structural modifications.”

“So how does it stay up?”

This is the part where I should have a complete engineering answer. I do not have a complete engineering answer. What I have is a concept, a fierce belief in the concept, and the phone number of the only person I know who might be able to make the physics work.

“A removable tension-and-counterweight system,” I say, with the specific confidence of a woman who has Googled those words in that order approximately forty times in the past week.

Helena’s left eyebrow rises a quarter inch. Devastating.

“Tilly. We have four finalists. Two of them brought structural engineers to this meeting.”

Fantastic. I brought lip gloss and audacity.

Riva Cole looks up from the board and directly at me. “Can you make it feel intimate? Or will it just be impressive?”

“I want the canopy low enough that you can smell it,” I say. “I want jasmine in your hair when you say your vows. Impressive is easy. Intimate takes more nerve.”

Blanche won’t start. I call Greer.

She picks up on the second ring, which is what she always does. Not the first ring, because she’s not sitting around waiting for me to need her. Not the third, because by then I might think she’s busy. The second ring. Every time. I have never once considered what that consistency might mean.

She pulls into the lot seventeen minutes later in her dark green pickup. She’s coming from the gym, which means she’s in black climbing pants and a fitted tank top and her dark hair is pulled back and her arms are out.

Greer’s arms are — I’ve noticed Greer’s arms. That’s fine. Everyone notices Greer’s arms. Noticing this is an observation, not a confession.

She notices my hands trembling. Without saying anything, she reaches over and closes one hand around my wrist. Steady pressure. Three seconds. Then lets go.

My pulse is doing something stupid.

“I have to tell you something. I’ve been thinking about downloading a dating app. For women.”

The silence that follows is the loudest sound I’ve ever heard.

“I’ve been attracted to women for — I don’t know. A long time. More than a year, at least. Maybe longer than that.”

She tells me no woman owes an audition. That orientation isn’t a skills test. Through the open window, she looks at me for a beat too long.

“You’re not going to be anyone’s bad first date.”

She pulls out of the lot, and I sit in my idling van with my shaking hands on the steering wheel and my heart doing something I don’t have a name for.

Everything is exactly the same as it was an hour ago, and nothing will be the same again.

Peer Review — After Hours — Thirteen months later, Greer has the keys to the empty conservatory. Tilly has plans. A midnight anniversary, a stone wall, and the filthiest, most joyful scene in the series — too explicit for Amazon.
