Books Like Pride and Prejudice: Enemies to Lovers With the Door Open (2026)

If you’re looking for books like Pride and Prejudice, you’re really looking for the feeling Jane Austen bottled in 1813: a man who insults you at a dance, a woman who decides on the spot exactly who he is and the long, delicious process of both of them discovering they were wrong. Elizabeth Bennet and Fitzwilliam Darcy wrote the blueprint for enemies to lovers, and every rivals romance since has been working from their notes.

Netflix’s new limited series, starring Emma Corrin as Elizabeth and Jack Lowden as Darcy, is set for December 2026, so it’s the perfect time to stock up. This list keeps Austen’s engine intact (the bad first impression, the class friction and the slow change of heart) and adds the heat she kept off the page. Six Fractal Enigma picks come first, followed by Austen retellings and classic gateways.

Why Pride and Prejudice Is the Enemies-to-Lovers Blueprint

Austen built the engine modern romance still runs on. It starts with a disastrous first impression: Darcy calls Elizabeth “tolerable, but not handsome enough to tempt me” within her hearing, and by the end of the evening the whole neighborhood has decided he’s the proudest, most disagreeable man in the world. Add class friction, with his estate and connections on one side and her mortifying family on the other. Then add pride on both sides, because Elizabeth’s prejudice is every bit as stubborn as his snobbery.

Then comes the worst proposal in literature, in which Darcy makes it clear he loves Elizabeth against his will, his reason and even his character, and she turns him down flat. Her refusal and his letter the next morning force both of them to rethink everything they thought they knew, and the rest of the novel is the slow, satisfying work of two proud people changing their minds. Joe Wright’s 2005 film with Keira Knightley and Matthew Macfadyen turned one flexed hand into a love language, but the book had already done the hard part.

The best books like Pride and Prejudice keep that structure: a real reason to dislike each other, a gap in class or power that makes wanting each other costly and a change of heart that’s earned rather than announced. Darcy is also the original grump, as our grumpy/sunshine romance guide points out, and our romance tropes list explains the tags you’ll see below.

Austen closed the door at the altar. The picks below don’t: every one is rated Inferno (🌶️🌶️🌶️🌶️🌶️), and our enemies-to-lovers romance list has more in every pairing.

Bridget Jones’s Diary — Helen Fielding

More Jane Austen

Once you’ve finished with Elizabeth and Darcy, Persuasion is Austen’s second-chance romance, with a love letter that has been ruining readers for two centuries. Emma gives you a heroine who is wrong about almost everyone, including the man who has been standing right in front of her.

FAQ: Books Like Pride and Prejudice

Is Pride and Prejudice an enemies-to-lovers book?

Mostly, yes. Elizabeth and Darcy aren’t sworn enemies so much as two proud people who misjudge each other badly, which is why the book gets shelved under both enemies to lovers and rivals to lovers. The dislike is real, the attraction is inconvenient and the change of heart takes most of the novel.

Is there a spicy version of Pride and Prejudice?

Austen keeps everything off the page, but the Fractal Enigma picks above take the same setup to Inferno heat (🌶️🌶️🌶️🌶️🌶️). The Older Brother Clause is the closest structural match, and Hostile Takeover is free to download.

When does Netflix’s Pride and Prejudice come out?

Netflix has set its new limited series, starring Emma Corrin and Jack Lowden, for December 2026. That leaves plenty of time to reread the original and work through a few books like Pride and Prejudice first.

Which of these books are free with Kindle Unlimited?

The Older Brother Clause, The Boat Builder’s Enemy and Off the Record are free with Kindle Unlimited, and Hostile Takeover is a free download. Bone to Pick and Hostile Merger list their current purchase options on their book pages. If you’re not a member yet, you can start a Kindle Unlimited membership on Amazon.
