She came for the story. She stayed for the woman behind it.

Rowan Bell doesn’t do puff pieces.

She’s an investigative journalist with a reputation for making powerful people uncomfortable—and she once called Wren Wilder’s coming-out campaign “market-tested authenticity” in a viral takedown. So when her editor assigns her to a thirty-day tour profile of the queer country-pop superstar, Rowan plans to keep her distance, ask hard questions, and write the truth.

Then the tour bus breaks down. They get one motel room. One bed.

Wren Wilder has survived being outed by her record label, a tabloid breakup, and a career spent performing the “safe” version of herself. She doesn’t need a gorgeous, sharp-tongued reporter digging into her wounds—especially one who looks at her like she’s a problem to solve and kisses her like she’s the only answer.

Their rules are simple: nothing on the record, nothing that compromises the story, and absolutely no falling in love.

They break every single one.

When Wren’s label weaponizes their secret to control them both, Rowan has to choose between the exposé that will define her career and the woman who has already redefined everything she thought she wanted.

Chapter One: The Assignment

The pitch was airtight. I knew it the way I knew every story that mattered—bone-deep, gut-level, the kind of certainty that made sleep optional and social skills irrelevant.

“Morality clauses,” I said, clicking to the next slide. Vivian’s office smelled like cold brew and editorial fatigue, the particular scent of a magazine that had survived three rounds of layoffs by turning its bullpen into a “collaborative workspace,” which meant fewer desks and more anxiety. “Written into recording contracts at five of the six major labels. Selectively enforced. Care to guess who gets flagged?”

Vivian Chase sat behind her desk like a woman who had weathered every apocalypse the media industry could conjure and refused to flinch at the next one. Silver hair, immaculate glasses, black turtleneck. She looked like the final boss of journalism, if the final boss drank oat milk lattes and had once thrown a galley proof at a fact-checker who misattributed a Supreme Court quote.

“Queer artists,” she said, not guessing.

“Queer artists.” I pulled up the spreadsheet—three months of work, sixty-two interviews, a music-industry lawyer in Nashville who’d been quietly building a case file for years. “The clauses give labels discretionary power over public behavior, social media presence, and—here’s the kicker—undisclosed personal relationships. They’re written broadly enough to apply to anyone, but in practice, they’re weaponized against artists whose identities make sponsors nervous.”

I watched Vivian’s expression. She had a tell—when a story genuinely interested her, the left corner of her mouth twitched before the right one caught up. Both corners were engaged. Good sign.

“I have three former label employees willing to go on the record. Two artists whose contracts were terminated after they refused to comply. One executive at a mid-tier label who says the practice was openly discussed at industry conferences until someone realized it looked bad in writing.” I closed my laptop. “This is a front-page story, Vivian. This is awards-circuit material. And nobody else is working it because nobody else has these sources.”

Vivian took off her glasses and cleaned them with the hem of her turtleneck—the gesture she used when she was about to disappoint someone while maintaining the fiction that she was still considering their proposal.

“It’s a great pitch,” she said.

The word but hung in the air like smoke.

“But?”

“But we’re hemorrhaging subscribers, Rowan. Ad revenue dropped fourteen percent last quarter. The board wants engagement metrics, not Pulitzers.” She replaced her glasses and looked at me with the particular brand of sympathy reserved for journalists who still believed quality was its own currency. “I can’t greenlight a six-month investigation with legal exposure when we’re three bad months from another round of cuts.”

I opened my mouth.

“I have something else,” she said, in the tone of someone sliding a consolation prize across the table. She pulled a folder from a stack—an actual paper folder, which meant she’d been planning this ambush. “Wren Wilder.”

The name landed in my chest like a stone dropped into still water.
