She lost a groom and found a girl who actually stays.

Tessa Reed inherited a vineyard, gave up her city career, and got left at the altar. Now she’s running Reed Ridge alone — buried in debt, dodging her ex’s predatory family, and white-knuckling her way through a season that might be her last. She doesn’t need a messy city girl with a cracked phone and no spare tire complicating things. She definitely doesn’t need to think about the way that girl’s hands look on a wine bottle.

Mia Santos took the vineyard job because she was three weeks from homeless and the listing came with housing. She’s not staying. She never stays. She’s too much for every job, every relationship, every room she’s ever been in. But Tessa’s vineyard smells like rosemary and warm earth, and Tessa’s voice drops half a register when she gives instructions, and Mia’s been lying to herself about what she wants since college.

What starts as a pour lesson turns into a kiss in the cellar. The kiss turns into something neither of them can stop. And when Tessa’s ex-fiancé’s family tries to buy the vineyard out from under her, Mia has to decide: run like she always does, or stay and fight for the woman, the land, and the life she didn’t know she was looking for.

Chapter One: Flat Tire, Full Glass

The tire blew somewhere between the last gas station and the middle of absolutely fucking nowhere.

Mia heard it first—a sharp pop like a gunshot, then the horrible flapping drag of rubber on gravel—and her hands locked on the wheel as the Honda lurched right. She wrestled it onto the shoulder, which wasn’t really a shoulder so much as a strip of dirt between the road and an endless row of something green and leafy she couldn’t identify. The engine ticked. Dust settled on the windshield. Somewhere in the distance, a bird screamed like it was laughing at her.

“Cool,” she said to nobody. “Very cool.”

She got out and looked at the damage. The front passenger tire was shredded—not just flat, but annihilated, black ribbons of rubber fanning out across the gravel like a crime scene. She’d been meaning to replace it for six months. She’d been meaning to do a lot of things for six months.

No spare. She already knew that. The spare had been sacrificed to a pothole on the BQE back in March and she’d never gotten around to buying a new one because new tires cost money and money was a concept she had a mostly theoretical relationship with.

She checked her phone. Four percent battery. One bar of signal that flickered to zero when she held the phone above her head like an idiot. Google Maps had given up rendering the road she was on about two miles back—just a gray void where the map should be, like even the algorithm didn’t believe this place existed.

The vineyard was supposed to be close. The email from the owner—T. Reed, clipped and professional, exactly two paragraphs—had said “last right after the stone bridge, follow the drive to the main house.” Mia had crossed a stone bridge about half a mile ago. The drive, apparently, was this dirt road that had just murdered her tire.

She grabbed her duffel from the backseat, slung it over her shoulder, and started walking.

It was late afternoon in early June, and the heat was the wet, heavy kind that stuck your shirt to your back in thirty seconds. The road was unpaved and rutted, lined on both sides with rows of low, gnarled plants strung along wire trellises. Grapevines, she realized belatedly. She was walking through a vineyard.

Okay. Maybe I can do this for a summer.

She was very, very good at lying to herself. She’d had a lot of practice.
