She came for a drink. She stayed for the way one woman made her feel impossible to forget.

Jessa Bell is running on fumes. Overworked, freshly out of a relationship that weaponized every compliment, and so tired of being invisible she’s forgotten what being noticed feels like. She walks into a neighborhood wine bar because she doesn’t want to go home—and meets a woman who will change everything about the way she sees herself.

Vivian Shaw is thirty-nine, composed, and devastatingly attentive. She doesn’t waste words. When she pays someone a compliment, she means it—and Jessa, who has been starving for genuine attention without knowing it, is completely unprepared for what that feels like.

What begins as casual conversation over wine turns into something neither of them expected: a high-heat romance built on praise, trust, and the intoxicating power of being seen by someone who means every word. But Jessa’s past taught her that praise comes with conditions, and Vivian’s past taught her that vulnerability comes with a price. To build something real, they’ll both have to risk the thing they’re most afraid of—being known.

You’ll love this book if you enjoy:

✅ Praise kink as the central erotic engine—verbal, specific, devastating
✅ Older woman / younger woman sapphic romance (39/27)
✅ Slow burn that EXPLODES (🌶️🌶️🌶️🌶️🌶️ — graphic, explicit, emotional)
✅ “Only soft for you” and “touch her and die” energy
✅ A heroine who learns to believe the compliment
✅ A love interest who learns to need instead of just give
✅ Wine bar setting that feels like a character
✅ HEA guaranteed

⚠️ Content Warning: This novel contains explicit sexual content (graphic FF scenes), strong language, depictions of emotional manipulation recovery, and themes of anxiety and self-doubt. Intended for readers 18+.

Chapter One: After Hours

The text came at 5:47 p.m., which was the most insulting part.

Not the rejection itself—Jessa had been bracing for that since Tuesday, when the client’s replies had started arriving twelve hours late and stripped of exclamation points. Not even the wording, which was the corporate equivalent of a shrug. We’ve decided to go in a different direction. Seven words. Three weeks of work.

She packed up her laptop. Put on her jacket—the one with the fraying cuff she kept meaning to replace. Left the coffee shop where she’d been working since nine that morning because she couldn’t afford a proper studio and her apartment made her want to climb the walls.

She wasn’t going anywhere. That was the problem. She had an apartment with a leak above the kitchen sink, a refrigerator containing half a lime and something in a Tupperware she was afraid to open, and a bed she’d been sharing with nothing but her own anxiety for eight months since Morgan left.

So she kept walking. She almost passed The Alderly without seeing it—a narrow wine bar wedged between a bookshop and a place that sold artisanal candles for thirty-eight dollars each. Tonight the warm light coming through that window looked less like someone else’s life and more like a door that was already open.

She pushed inside before she could talk herself out of it.

The bar was smaller than she’d expected, and better. Exposed brick. A long wooden bar top polished by ten thousand hands. Low music with a piano and no urgency. The lighting was the color of good whiskey, and the whole room smelled like wine and old wood.

The bartender appeared—mid-forties, silver-streaked dark hair, handsome in a way that didn’t ask for opinions. “First time?” she said. “You looked at the hook like it surprised you. What do you like?”

“Red. Something that doesn’t need me to think about it.”

“Côtes du Rhône,” Margot said. “It won’t ask you any questions.”

She got about four minutes of peace before she noticed the woman.

Two seats to her left. Dark auburn hair, the color of expensive tea. A jaw that could have been drawn with a ruler. She radiated the kind of quiet authority that made rooms go half a degree quieter when she walked in. The word that came to Jessa’s mind was composed.

Their eyes met. Gray-green. Calm in a way that Jessa’s were not and had never been. She held Jessa’s gaze for one beat. Two. Then she gave a small nod. Not a greeting—something less and somehow enormously more. I see you.

Jessa felt the nod land somewhere in her stomach. Warm. Unexpected. She walked home in the cold and thought about that nod the entire way. Pressed her thumb to the inside of her own wrist, where her pulse was doing something it had no business doing over a stranger’s nod, and thought: I want to go back. Not for the wine.
