Evan

The housing portal had said single occupancy. Evan had read it eleven times over the summer, the way other people reread acceptance letters. Hartwell Hall, Room 214, single occupancy. He’d built his entire mental model of freshman year around those two words — a door he could close, a space where nobody would watch him, judge him, ask him questions he didn’t have answers to.

The girl at the check-in table popped her gum and slid a keycard across the folding table like she was dealing him a bad hand.

“Yeah, so, there was a flood in Whitfield over the summer. Pipes. We had to consolidate.” She didn’t look up from her laptop. “You’re in 214, but it’s a double now. Your roommate checked in yesterday.”

“I’m sorry — my what?”

“Roommate.” Pop. “Mason Reyes. Sophomore. He’s chill, I’ve met him.”

“There must be a mistake. I have the confirmation email. It says single.”

“And then there was a flood,” she said, with the patience of someone who had already had this conversation forty times today, “and now it says double. You can file an appeal with Res Life. There’s a waitlist. It’s like sixty people long.”

Behind him, a father balancing a mini-fridge cleared his throat. Evan picked up the keycard. His hand was steady. His hands were always steady — he’d trained them to be, the way he’d trained his face to stay pleasant and his voice to stay even, because back home in Carter’s Mill, people noticed when you weren’t pleasant and even, and then they asked about you, and then your mother heard about it at Wednesday night Bible study.

“Thank you,” he said, pleasant and even, and went to go meet the stranger he’d be undressing in front of for the next nine months.
