No rules. One bed. Eight days to ruin a friendship — or start a forever.

Riley James is the responsible one — the planner, the fixer, the woman who hasn’t done anything spontaneous in years. She’s never let herself want things she can’t control. Especially not her best friend.

Jordan Blake is the wild one — spontaneous, creative, emotionally open, and secretly in love with Riley for six years. She’s never said a word because Riley is the one person she can’t afford to lose.

When they finally take their long-planned girls’ trip to a luxury Caribbean resort, armed with a pact — no rules, no judgment, do whatever feels good — what starts as playful experimentation turns into something neither of them can contain. Touch that lingers. Looks that say too much. Nights where they can’t tell where one of them ends and the other begins.

By the time checkout rolls around, they have to decide: was this just a vacation fantasy, or the start of something real?

Chapter One: The Pact

Riley had a system for packing, and the system was this: one outfit per day, sealed in its own gallon-size Ziploc bag, labeled with a strip of blue painter’s tape on which she’d written the day and the occasion in her neat block letters.

DAY 1 – TRAVEL. DAY 2 – BEACH/POOL. DAY 3 – EXCURSION. And so on, all the way through DAY 8 – DEPARTURE, which was just the leggings and oversized sweatshirt she always flew home in because airports were cold and dignity was overrated at 6 a.m.

It was, she knew, a deeply unsexy way to pack for a tropical vacation. She didn’t care.

Her suitcase lay open on the bed, a perfect grid of labeled bags, and she stood over it in her underwear and an old Northwestern t-shirt, surveying the arrangement with the quiet satisfaction of a woman who had her life in order. Or at least her luggage.

Then her eyes landed on the bag she hadn’t labeled.

It sat at the bottom of the suitcase, underneath everything else, as if she’d been trying to bury it. She reached in and pulled it out. Inside the clear plastic, folded with care she’d never admit to, was a bikini. Not her usual swimsuit. A deep emerald green, high-cut on the hips, with a top that tied behind the neck and offered a view of her cleavage that could be charitably described as “generous.”

She’d packed it anyway. She didn’t know why. Or rather—she did know why, and that was worse.

Her phone buzzed on the nightstand. Jordan: RILEY. RILEY. I HAVE A CRISIS.

She picked up the phone and called. Jordan answered on the first ring. “Oh thank God. Okay, so, do I bring the red sundress or the yellow one? Because the red one makes my boobs look incredible but the yellow one makes my skin glow, and I need you to decide because I’ve been standing in front of my mirror for twenty minutes and I think my cat is judging me.”

Riley sat on the edge of the bed and smiled. She couldn’t help it. Talking to Jordan was like stepping into a warm room after being outside too long. “Bring both.”

“I am packing! I’m packing-adjacent. I have a suitcase open. There are things near it.” A rustling sound, and then the unmistakable glug of wine being poured. “Okay, I’m also having wine, but it’s pre-vacation wine. It’s festive.”

“It’s ten-thirty on a Wednesday night and our flight is at seven a.m.”

“Which is why I need wine. To sleep. It’s medicinal.”

In the back of the private transfer van, Jordan pulled her legs up onto the seat and turned to face Riley. “Okay. I have a proposition.”

“That word makes me nervous.”

“Everything makes you nervous. Listen.” She took Riley’s hand. “This week, I want us to make a pact. No rules. No rules, no judgment. We do whatever we want, say whatever we want, try whatever we want. No overthinking, no guilt, no consequences.”

“And when we go home?” Riley asked.

“Everything goes back to normal.” Jordan squeezed her hand. “Deal?”

She looked at Jordan’s face, open and hopeful and lovely, and said, “Deal.”

The suite was on the third floor. The bellhop opened the door, and Jordan made a sound that was borderline pornographic. “Oh. My. God.

It was stunning. A massive king bed dressed in crisp white linen and about forty pillows, sheer curtains billowing in the breeze, a freestanding bathtub near the window designed for exactly two people.

Jordan belly-flopped onto the bed with her arms spread wide. “Riley. Riley. Feel this bed. It’s like falling into a cloud. I’m never leaving this bed.”

Riley stood in the doorway. She was looking at Jordan—sprawled across the white sheets, dark hair fanning out, laughing with her whole body—and something cracked open in her chest. I am in so much trouble.

“So?” Jordan said. “No rules?”

Riley looked at her best friend. Her favorite person. The woman she had spent years not wanting, or wanting and not admitting it.

“No rules,” she said.
