Chapter One: The Guesthouse
I knew the guesthouse was a bad idea the second I said yes.
Not bad in the way people mean when they say bad idea with a little shiver of excitement, the way you describe a third drink or a spontaneous tattoo or a midnight swim you’ll laugh about later. I mean bad in the way a structural engineer means when she says the foundation has shifted and every load-bearing wall in the house is now a suggestion.
I said yes anyway, because Calder offered it like he was doing me a favor, and because the apartment above Nightjar Ink had actual water running down the interior walls, and because the alternative was sleeping on my sister’s pullout couch while Zeph’s three rescue cats took turns shedding on my equipment.
