She can control any car except the woman driving it.
Twenty-eight-year-old racing phenomenon Vesper Moretti is fast enough to win the world championship and reckless enough to destroy every car designed for her. After a catastrophic opening race, Moretti Corse hires forty-five-year-old engineering legend Dr. Astrid Falk to rebuild the team’s unreliable machine and control its uncontrollable driver.
Astrid is precise, silver-haired, and completely immune to Vesper’s charm. She demands discipline, data, and absolute compliance whenever Vesper is inside the car. Vesper responds by challenging every instruction Astrid gives her.
Their arguments become so charged that Astrid proposes a private test: if Vesper wants to prove she can follow directions, she can begin somewhere safer than a racetrack.
One encounter becomes a secret arrangement built around rules, praise, delayed gratification, and the relief Vesper finds in letting someone else take control. But when a mechanical failure nearly kills Vesper, Astrid discovers evidence that the car’s problems are not accidental. Someone inside Moretti Corse is sabotaging the team.
To survive the season, Vesper must learn that courage is not the same as recklessness. Astrid must decide whether protecting Vesper means controlling her choices or trusting her with the truth.

Meet Vesper Moretti. Twenty-eight. Fearless. About to meet the one woman who can make her hold still.
Chapter One: The Car That Tried to Kill Her
The steering went dead in my hands on the fourth lap, and my first thought — stupid, automatic, the kind of thought that gets you killed — was not again.
The hydraulic warning light had been flickering since the formation lap. I’d mentioned it on the radio. Matteo said the engineers were watching it. The engineers said the readings were within tolerance. Tolerance. A word designed by people who’ve never felt the exact moment a machine decides to stop cooperating with the body inside it.
Turn six. A fast left-hander that crests blind over a kerb and drops into a compression zone where the car pushes thirty-eight hundred kilos of downforce through the floor. I turned the wheel and it turned back empty. Not heavy. Not resistant. Just — gone. Like reaching for someone’s hand and closing your fingers on air.
The wall was ninety meters away and arriving fast.
My hands stayed on the wheel because my father taught me never to let go. He said this to me when I was eleven and sitting on his lap in a simulator that smelled like coffee and hydraulic fluid and Enzo Moretti’s aftershave.
My father died in a car that was supposed to protect him, but his voice was still the one I heard when the world narrowed to physics and concrete.
I hit the barrier at a hundred and sixty kilometres per hour. Two seconds of violence. My helmet cracked against the headrest. My harness bit through three layers of fireproof fabric. Then the car stopped moving and the silence was so enormous I thought I might be dead.
Then the radio crackled.
“Vesper.” Matteo’s voice. My brother’s voice. Tight with the specific terror of a man who has already lost one family member to a race car. “Vesper, respond.”
I coughed. Tasted blood — bit my tongue on impact. Spat into my balaclava.
“Car’s fucked,” I said. “I’m fine.”
I wasn’t fine. My ribs were screaming and my neck felt like someone had tried to unscrew my head from my shoulders, and my hands were shaking so badly I couldn’t undo my own harness. But I said I was fine, because that’s what you say when twenty million people are watching and the alternative is letting them see you break.
