Chapter One: Past Due
The notice was taped to her door at exactly eye level. Not slipped under the frame like a passive-aggressive flyer, not stuck to the peephole where she’d have to peel it off—taped with a single strip of blue painter’s tape, the kind that came off clean without damaging the finish.
Lena stared at it for a full ten seconds before she pulled it free.
Dear Ms. Ortiz,
This letter serves as formal notice that your rent for Unit 1 is now fourteen (14) days past due. The outstanding balance of $1,100.00 was due on the first of the month. Please remit payment or contact me to discuss your account within seven (7) business days.

Lena read it twice. Then she unlocked her apartment door, walked inside, dropped her bag on the floor, sat on the edge of her couch, and opened her banking app.
Three hundred and twelve dollars. That was what stood between her and the kind of adult who paid rent on time.
She closed the app, tipped her head back against the couch cushion, and said, to no one, “Fuck.”
The apartment didn’t answer. It never did, but she talked to it anyway. This brownstone was different. The apartment had charm in the way old things did when someone bothered to maintain them: original hexagonal bathroom tile in a creamy white, baseboards that actually had profile to them, radiators that clanked and hissed but put out real heat.
Nadia Chen ran her building like a woman who’d read every property management manual ever published and then decided she could do better.
Which was why a late-rent notice from her felt less like bureaucracy and more like disappointing a very composed, very particular person who Lena did not want to disappoint.
