The steering went dead in my hands on the fourth lap, and my first thought — stupid, automatic, the kind of thought that gets you killed — was not again.
The hydraulic warning light had been flickering since the formation lap. I’d mentioned it on the radio. Matteo said the engineers were watching it. The engineers said the readings were within tolerance. Tolerance. A word designed by people who’ve never felt the exact moment a machine decides to stop cooperating with the body inside it.
Turn six. A fast left-hander that crests blind over a kerb and drops into a compression zone where the car pushes thirty-eight hundred kilos of downforce through the floor. I coughed. Tasted blood — bit my tongue on impact. Spat into my balaclava.
“Car’s fucked,” I said. “I’m fine.”
I wasn’t fine. My ribs were screaming and my neck felt like someone had tried to unscrew my head from my shoulders, and my hands were shaking so badly I couldn’t undo my own harness. But I said I was fine, because that’s what you say when twenty million people are watching and the alternative is letting them see you break.
