She complained about the noise. Then she became it.

Thirty-seven-year-old Beth Harris has moved into a quiet Philadelphia townhouse with one goal: recover from her divorce, renovate the kitchen, and stop making decisions based on what other people expect from her.

The plan falls apart the first night when her neighbor’s headboard repeatedly hits the shared wall.

Jenna Moore is thirty, gorgeous, annoying, and apparently incapable of having quiet sex.

Beth leaves an angry note. Jenna knocks on her door with an apology, a bottle of wine, and a smile that makes Beth forget what she intended to say. Their one-night truce turns into the easiest thing in either woman’s life: sex with no explanations, no expectations, and no need to share the complicated parts.

They make six rules to keep it casual. Every rule fails.

Sleepovers fail first. The no-asking rule fails when Beth gets jealous. The family rule falls apart when Jenna’s sister shows up and Beth is standing in the kitchen wearing Jenna’s hoodie. And the final rule fails when Beth has to decide whether Jenna is her neighbor or her partner.

The real problem is not the thin walls. It’s that neither woman knows how to ask for more without risking the one relationship that already feels like home.

Chapter One: The Wall

The rental truck was half-empty, and that was the point.

I’d left the dining set. The espresso machine Mike picked out that I never liked. The headboard we’d bought together at a furniture store in King of Prussia where I spent forty-five minutes pretending to care about thread counts while he explained the importance of lumbar support in a mattress. I left the throw pillows, the matching bath towels, the wine rack his mother gave us as an anniversary gift that held exactly twelve bottles and zero joy.

I kept the books. My clothes. The cast-iron skillet that was mine before the marriage and would be mine long after the paperwork finished bleeding out. A box of old architectural blueprints I’d been collecting since law school. My running shoes.

Everything I owned fit in a ten-foot U-Haul with room to spare, and standing on the sidewalk in Fairmount looking up at my new townhouse, I thought: Good. Travel light.

The place was narrow. Three stories, red brick, original hardwood under decades of someone else’s scuff marks. The previous owner had been an eighty-year-old widower who apparently hadn’t updated anything since the Clinton administration. The kitchen had laminate counters the color of old teeth, cabinets that stuck, and a faucet that dripped in a rhythm I’d either fix or lose my mind to.

It was mine. Only mine. No one else’s name on the deed, no one else’s opinion in the paint samples, no one else’s version of compromise slowly eating the edges off everything I wanted.

At 11:47 p.m., the wall woke me up.

Not the wall, exactly. The sound coming through it — a rhythmic, unmistakable thudding that started slow and built with the kind of steady acceleration that suggested either a very dedicated carpenter or a headboard with poor wall clearance.

I lay in the dark and stared at the ceiling. My townhouse shared a wall with the unit next door. The wall was brick and plaster and apparently constructed from tissue paper, because I could hear everything.

And I do mean everything.

The thudding picked up speed. Then a voice — a woman’s voice, low and breathless, the kind of moan that starts in the chest and drags itself out slow. Not performative. This was real, raw, and detailed enough that I could map the escalation: a slow build, a catch of breath, a whispered right there, and then a sound that was pure, unfiltered pleasure.

I pressed the pillow over my face. It didn’t help.

My face was hot. My jaw was clenched. My body was doing something inconvenient and unauthorized that I refused to acknowledge, because I was a thirty-seven-year-old attorney who had just extracted herself from a dead marriage, and I was not going to lie in the dark getting turned on by my neighbor’s sex life on night one.

I sat up and slammed my palm against the wall. Three hard strikes. The noise paused. Three glorious seconds of silence. Then the headboard started again. Louder.

At 7:15 the next morning, someone knocked on my door.

The woman on my porch was holding two coffees and my note.

She was about five-seven. Dark blonde hair, loose and slightly tangled. Green eyes — not hazel, not blue-green, but actual green, the kind of color that makes you recheck. She was wearing jeans that fit like they’d been tailored and a cropped white tank top despite the October chill, and there was a small tattoo on her inner wrist that I noticed because I was looking at her hands and I should not have been looking at her hands.

She was beautiful. Obviously, irritatingly, inconveniently beautiful.

“I’m Jenna. I live next door.” She tilted the note toward me. “‘Dear Occupant’ is a strong choice for a noise complaint. Very municipal. I almost expected a case number.”

I took the coffee because mine wasn’t ready yet. “I don’t need an apology,” I said. “I need sleep.”

She leaned against my doorframe like she’d been doing it for years. She looked at me a beat too long, then left.

I closed the door. Drank her coffee. It was good. Annoyingly good.

The wall between us was brick and plaster and a hundred years of Philadelphia row-house construction, and it was absolutely, uselessly, catastrophically thin.

This was going to be a problem.
