She was supposed to marry the perfect man. Her driver was only supposed to get her to the altar. Instead, one gets in the getaway car—and the other drives straight into trouble.

On the morning of her society wedding, Briar Wrenford doesn’t panic because she hates the groom. She panics because she looks at the man waiting for her at the altar and realizes that the rest of her life has been planned so carefully, there’s no room left for her in it.

Her only escape route is the woman idling beyond the estate gates: Nessa Vale, the tattooed private driver who’s spent three years transporting the Wrenford family’s money, secrets, and impossible demands—and three years pretending she doesn’t want the bride.

Their plan is simple. Drive to a hotel. Call off the wedding. Survive the scandal. But Briar’s mother freezes every account she owns. The tabloids want a story. And the only safe place Nessa knows is a friend’s off-season inn on the Maine coast—five days of one car, one motel room, and one bed too many.

Nessa has rules: no touching a client in crisis. No kissing a woman who might just be running scared. No falling for someone whose family has the power to destroy her business and call it a public service.

Briar has one rule: stop living by everyone else’s.

She’s not confused. She’s not experimenting. And the closer Nessa drives her to safety, the more Briar realizes that the woman behind the wheel is the first real thing she’s ever chosen.

Chapter One: Something Borrowed

The first thing I noticed on the morning of my wedding was the peonies.

Not because they were beautiful, although they were—two hundred stems of Coral Charm, custom-sourced from a farm in the Hudson Valley that my mother had placed on retainer in February. They filled every surface of the bridal suite like a soft pink invasion, their petals so perfectly opened they looked engineered. Which, knowing my mother, they probably were.

No. I noticed the peonies because three of them were fake.

Back corner, near the window. The stems were wrapped in the same blush ribbon as the rest, nestled into the same hand-thrown ceramic vases, and positioned at the same precise thirty-degree angle. But the color was a shade too even, and the petals didn’t bruise where they’d been pressed against the glass. Someone on the floral team had run short and filled in with silk.

No one else would catch it. That was the point. The Wrenford aesthetic didn’t tolerate gaps, even beautiful ones. If something was missing, you replaced it with something that looked real enough to survive the photographs.

Story of my goddamn life.

“Briar, chin up.”

Marguerite—my mother’s personal stylist, which was a job title I still couldn’t say without wanting to set something on fire—tipped my jaw with two fingers and resumed blending foundation along my hairline with the precision of a Renaissance forger. I’d been sitting in this chair for forty-five minutes. My face was a construction site.

“You have the most incredible bone structure,” she said, the way she said it every time, like my cheekbones were a public service.

“Thank you.”

“Your mother’s, obviously.”

“Obviously.”

The bridal suite at Wrenford Estate was a fourteen-hundred-square-foot monument to tasteful opulence. Italian marble floors, French doors opening onto a garden terrace, a claw-foot tub that could seat a small family, and a vanity area that made professional makeup studios look like they were trying too hard. Every detail had been selected by my mother over the course of eighteen months, which was longer than some civilizations lasted and roughly how long I’d been pretending that the knot in my stomach was excitement.

Around me, the machinery hummed. Three stylists. Two assistants. A woman whose sole job was to steam the veil. My maid of honor, Phoebe, sat in the corner scrolling through her phone with the practiced boredom of someone who’d been to enough society weddings to know that the bride was the least important person in the room.

I watched them all in the vanity mirror—the choreography of women working around a woman, for a woman, on behalf of a woman—and tried to find the seam where the performance ended and I began.

I couldn’t.

I hadn’t been able to find it in months. Maybe longer. Maybe I’d never had a seam—maybe I’d been assembled seamlessly from the start, one continuous garment of Briar Wrenford, designed for comfort, praised for fit, and never once tried on by the woman wearing it.

I saw her through the window.

Not the garden window—the narrow side panel near the wardrobe, the one that overlooked the service drive and the west gate. The glass was old enough to warp slightly, so the image had a dreamy, soft-focus quality, like a memory that hadn’t happened yet.

Nessa Vale leaned against the driver’s door of her black SUV with her arms crossed, watching the caterers unload. Black suit, tailored sharp enough to cut. White shirt, open one button past professional. Her dark hair was braided down her back in a thick rope that caught the morning light. One arm was inked from wrist to shoulder—geometric tattoos I’d never been close enough to fully trace, only glimpsed through sleeve edges and rolled cuffs during the handful of times she’d driven me somewhere.

She stood the way she always stood: like she was waiting for something to go wrong and had already planned three ways to fix it.

In three years, Nessa had driven my mother to a hundred events, my father to the airport more times than either of them could count, and me to exactly fourteen appointments, three galas, and one funeral. I knew this because I had counted. I knew this because every time I slid into the back seat of that pristine vehicle, I spent the entire drive watching the back of her neck and wondering what she’d look like if she ever turned around and really looked at me.

She never did. She was impeccably professional. She opened doors without making eye contact. She anticipated routes without being told. She said “good evening” and “we’ll arrive in twenty minutes” and “is the temperature comfortable” in a voice that was low and even and gave away exactly nothing.

I picked up my phone. Typed one word.

Help.

I pressed send.

Three dots appeared. Disappeared. Appeared again.

Then:

West gate. Three minutes. Bring shoes you can run in.

I stood up, crossed the room, and stole Phoebe’s sneakers from under the couch.

“Briar?” Marguerite said. “Where are you—”

“I need air.” I smiled. The last perfect smile. The last silk peony. “Just one minute.”

I walked out of the bridal suite in a robe, sneakers, and eleven pounds of wedding dress draped over my arm like the shed skin of a woman I’d spent thirty-three years pretending to be. Turned right, toward the service corridor. And for the first time in thirty-three years, I didn’t look back to see who was watching.
