The envelope was the color of a threat.
Not red — that would’ve been dramatic, at least. This was the specific shade of institutional cream that government offices use when they want to ruin your life politely. Thick stock. Certified mail sticker. Return address printed in a font designed by someone who had never experienced joy.
I found it wedged between my door and the frame like a passive-aggressive bookmark, right as I was trying to balance a wet canvas against my hip, a coffee in my left hand, and a paintbrush between my teeth. The brush was loaded with cadmium yellow. There’s a smear of it on the envelope to this day.
My name was spelled correctly, which felt like a bad sign. In my experience, anything addressed to Maeve A. Collins with full middle initial meant either a tax document or an extinction-level event.
