She can trace money through twelve shell companies. She cannot survive one quiet “good girl” from the CFO.
Nora Solís is the forensic accountant companies hire when their numbers stop telling the truth. At twenty-nine, she is brilliant, relentless, and nearly impossible to intimidate.
Then the audit committee assigns her to investigate Aurelia Consumer Group and its famously cold billionaire CFO, Evelyn Hart.
Evelyn is forty-seven, silver-streaked, impeccably controlled, and rumored to have ended careers with a single raised eyebrow. Nora should be analyzing her approval chain. Instead, she is becoming embarrassingly interested in receiving the CFO’s approval herself.
One private “good girl” nearly destroys Nora’s professional concentration. One accidental “mommy” reveals exactly how much trouble they are in.
Their initial investigation clears Evelyn of direct wrongdoing, and Nora is removed from the investigative engagement before either woman acts on the attraction. Only then does Nora ask Evelyn to kiss her.
One kiss becomes praise. Praise becomes private control. And the word Nora has always been too embarrassed to use becomes the one Evelyn makes her say clearly.
Their relationship is consensual, adult, and completely separate from the investigation. Until new evidence appears. Forged approvals now point directly to Evelyn. A missing memo proves she knew more than she admitted.
Nora must step away from the woman she loves and determine whether the company’s famous ice queen is a victim, an accomplice, or simply another executive who believed her reasons made concealment acceptable.

Chapter One: The Investigator Arrives
The elevator smelled like money that had been laundered through taste.
Not the obvious kind—not cologne or leather or whatever hedge fund managers bathed in before they ruined a pension fund. This was subtler. Limestone dust and climate-controlled air and the faint trace of something floral that probably cost more per ounce than my rent. The kind of scent that existed only in buildings where the lobby alone had a higher property value than the block I grew up on in Newark.
I adjusted my glasses and flipped to the second page of my brief.
At 2:13 a.m. Eastern, an encrypted email had arrived in the inbox of Aurelia Consumer Group’s audit committee. No name. No return address. Just a methodical, sixteen-page summary of alleged financial misconduct in the company’s fastest-growing division, Aurelia Well, and enough supporting detail to make every independent board member lose a full night’s sleep.
False distributor sales. Hidden inventory. Shell consulting firms. Manipulated bonus calculations. Retaliation against at least one employee who had raised concerns internally.
The potential overstatement exceeded nine hundred million dollars across three fiscal years.
Nine hundred million. Not a rounding error. Not an aggressive estimate. A lie large enough to require its own organizational structure.
By seven a.m., the audit committee chair had called my boss. By nine, Samuel Okafor had called me. By eleven, I was on the Acela. By one, I was standing in a forty-eight-story glass-and-stone tower on the west side of Manhattan, watching floor numbers climb on a brushed-brass panel that probably cost more than my car.
I was not nervous.
I had done this before. Entered companies where the numbers told a story nobody wanted to read aloud. I had sat across from executives who earned more in a quarter than my mother would see in a lifetime and asked them questions they did not want to answer. I had traced money through shell companies, reconstructed deleted communications, and documented the precise moment when aggressive accounting became fraud.
I was very good at my job.
The elevator opened on forty-six.
