She rebuilt his knee. He surrendered everything else.

Grant Whitmore is 44, old money, and used to controlling every room he enters. When a skiing accident destroys his knee, he’s forced into intensive physical therapy with a woman who doesn’t care about his name, his net worth, or his legendary composure. She cares about his quad activation. And she will not be charmed.

Elise Moreno is 29, brilliant, and impossible to buy. She’s spent her career handling entitled men with bad knees and worse attitudes. Grant is different. Not because he’s rich — because underneath the tailoring and the titanium cane, he’s the most touch-starved man she’s ever treated. And when she tells him he’s done well, his whole body softens like she’s said something holy.

What starts as irritation becomes fascination. What starts as fascination becomes an arrangement — sessions stay clinical, everything after hours is theirs. But when Grant’s world threatens to reduce Elise to something she’s not, he retreats into the fortress he’s spent his whole life building. And Elise has to decide whether a man who cares badly is worth fighting for — or just another version of the man who told her she was too much.

You’ll love this book if you enjoy:

✅ Older man / younger woman with real emotional depth
✅ Praise kink that starts clinical and becomes devastatingly personal
✅ A heroine who gives orders and a hero who craves them
✅ Slow burn that EXPLODES (🌶️🌶️🌶️🌶️🌶️ — graphic, explicit, emotional)
✅ Control/surrender dynamics built on trust, not games
✅ A rich man who learns to kneel and a strong woman who deserves devotion
✅ HEA guaranteed

⚠️ Content Warning: This novel contains explicit sexual content (graphic MF scenes including control/surrender dynamics and praise kink), strong language, depictions of physical rehabilitation, emotional withdrawal, and themes of loneliness and attachment. Intended for readers 18+.

Chapter One

The mountain doesn’t care how much money I have.

That’s the last coherent thought I have before my right knee decides to exit the conversation entirely. One second I’m carving through fresh powder on the back side of Ajax — clean turns, precise edges, the kind of skiing that looks effortless because I’ve spent thirty years making it that way — and the next second my ski catches a rut hidden beneath the snow, my knee torques sideways with a sound like someone snapping a green branch, and the sky trades places with the ground.

I don’t scream. Whitmores don’t scream. But I do lie on my back in the snow for a long, humiliating moment, staring at a Colorado sky that has the audacity to be perfectly blue, while my right knee sends up a flare of pain so bright and total that my vision whites out at the edges.

Get up, I think. Get up, you’re on a slope, people can see you.

I don’t get up.

I lie there with my poles still strapped to my wrists and my goggles fogged and my body — this body that I have maintained and controlled and relied upon for forty-four years — announcing, very clearly, that it has terms I haven’t agreed to.

Ski patrol arrives in ninety seconds. By then I’ve already catalogued the damage from feel alone: the knee is unstable, something inside it has torn loose, and my season — probably my year — is over.

The patroller is young, competent, kind. He stabilizes my leg with an inflatable splint and asks me to rate my pain on a scale of one to ten.

“Four,” I say.

It’s an eight. But I’ve been lying about pain since boarding school, and I’m not about to stop now for a twenty-something in a red jacket.

Three weeks later, I’m in my brownstone on the Upper East Side, and I have decided that if I ever have to look at these four walls from this particular angle again — reclined on the leather chaise in my study, right leg elevated on three pillows, ice pack sweating through a towel — I will burn this building to the ground and collect the insurance.

I reach for the single malt on the side table — Macallan 25, because if I’m going to be an invalid, I’m going to be a well-lubricated one — and my fingers close on air. Mrs. Park moved it to the bar cart this morning, three feet away, which might as well be three miles when your right leg is wrapped in a hinged brace and every pivot sends a bolt of electricity from your kneecap to your spine.

I’m forty-four years old. I run a seven-hundred-million-dollar family portfolio. I have controlled every variable in my life with the precision of a Swiss movement for twenty-six years, and now I need help getting to the bathroom.

The indignity is not the pain. I can handle pain. The indignity is the dependence.

Monday. Ten in the morning. Sterling Rehabilitation is on the second floor of a limestone building on Madison Avenue. The waiting room has Eames chairs and a reception desk staffed by a woman who greets me by name before I’ve opened my mouth.

The door to the treatment area opens.

She’s not what I expect.

Instead, a woman walks out who looks like she has never adjusted her tone for anyone in her life.

She’s compact — five-five, maybe — with an athlete’s build. Dark brown hair pulled back in a low ponytail, dark eyes that scan me the way a pilot scans instruments: quick, comprehensive, already forming conclusions.

She extends her hand. “Mr. Whitmore? I’m Elise Moreno. I’ll be managing your rehabilitation.”

Her handshake is firm, dry, and brief. No lingering. No extra squeeze. She shakes my hand the way she would shake anyone’s hand, and then she lets go.

“Elise. Please, call me Grant.”

“Let’s start with the assessment, and we’ll see.”

She walks me through the recovery plan without preamble. Twelve weeks, three sessions per week. She tells me the work will be boring, repetitive, and uncomfortable, and that my only job is to show up and do what she tells me.

I let a small smile surface. “I don’t take orders well.”

She doesn’t blink. Doesn’t smile. Doesn’t adjust.

“You do now.”

No one has spoken to me like that in years. Possibly ever.

In the car, my driver asks how the session went.

“Fine,” I say.

I do not say: She told me what to do, and I have been thinking about it for forty-five minutes.

The Home Session — A scene TOO HOT for Amazon

Grant surprises Elise with a treatment table for the brownstone’s home gym. She decides to run a “full assessment.” What follows is the filthiest, most emotionally surrendered scene in the series — resistance bands, clinical instructions, and a man who will do anything she tells him to.
