The wedding was canceled. The honeymoon was not.

When her groom vanishes forty-eight hours before their island wedding, Carys Bellweather — beauty mogul, control enthusiast, and a woman who has spent her entire life making herself impossible to abandon — is left with two hundred guests, a fashion magazine exclusive, and a twelve-foot orchid arch designed for a ceremony that will never happen.

The only person who doesn’t treat her like a crisis to contain is Nadira Kader — the forty-six-year-old wedding architect who has spent eighteen months building the celebration. Nadira cancels the ceremony, removes the press, relocates Carys to her private cliffside villa, and becomes the first person all week to remember that the bride is a person before she is an event.

Every part of the wedding and honeymoon has already been paid for. The private catamaran. The couples’ spa. The bridal suite. The lingerie no one has seen. Carys decides to use them — and asks Nadira to join her. Not as an employee. Not as a therapist. As the woman Carys has been watching for eighteen months and pretending not to want.

Nadira refuses. Then agrees to one night. Then one day. Then the rest of the week. Their affair transforms the ruined wedding into something Carys chose for herself — but when the groom returns with cameras following him, both women must decide whether what they built on an island can survive the mainland.

Chapter One: The Vanishing Act

The orchids were dying.

Not dramatically — not wilting onto the floor in some gothic collapse. They were doing the polite version: edges browning in the Caribbean heat, petals curling inward like they’d decided the ceremony wasn’t worth staying open for.

I noticed because noticing was the only thing keeping me upright.

“The phalaenopsis on the left side of the arch are getting too much direct sun,” I said into my phone, narrating for the magazine photographer who’d be arriving in the morning. “Can we get shade cloth over the west-facing panels before golden hour tomorrow?”

No one answered. I was talking to a voice memo. The florist had gone to dinner. The lighting designer was recalibrating something on the terrace. And my fiancé — the man whose name would appear beside mine on every invitation, every photograph, every carefully curated Instagram post for the rest of our shared, marketable, enviable life — was forty-five minutes late to the final ceremony rehearsal.

I checked my phone again. No messages. No missed calls. The last text from Orson was six hours old: Running errands in town. Back before dinner. Love you.

Love you with a period, not an exclamation point. Which meant nothing, because Orson always punctuated like a man composing a business email even when he was telling you he missed your body. I’d found it charming once. Steady. The grammatical equivalent of a man who would never leave.

I pocketed my phone and walked the aisle alone.

The ceremony pavilion at Caligo Cay was, objectively, the most beautiful structure I had ever stood inside. Open-air white steel frame perched on a cliff above the Caribbean, wound with jasmine and orchids and trailing greenery that caught the trade winds and released perfume in waves. Hurricane lanterns lined the aisle. The chairs — two hundred of them, rattan with linen cushions — faced the ocean. At sunset tomorrow, with the light doing that liquid-gold thing it did in this part of the world, my guests would cry before I even appeared.

I had designed every detail. The color of the cushions (warm ivory, not cold white — I tested eleven shades against my skin tone). The height of the arch (twelve feet, because I wanted guests to feel like they were standing inside a cathedral made of flowers rather than sitting in front of a backdrop). The scent profile (jasmine dominant, tuberose underneath, no roses because roses were expected and I had built an eight-figure company on the principle that expected was death).

I had not, apparently, designed a groom capable of showing up on time.

My phone buzzed. Ione.

Where’s Orson? His groomsmen are at the bar asking if rehearsal is still happening.

I typed back: Running late. Tell them thirty minutes.

Then I deleted “thirty minutes” and replaced it with “soon” because I didn’t actually know when he was coming, and precision was only useful when you controlled the variable.

I smoothed the front of my cream linen dress, checked that my earrings were level — my mother’s vintage Cartier, the ones she wore to her own wedding before my father decided monogamy was a creative constraint — and walked the aisle one more time. Alone. Practicing the tempo. Heel, pause, heel, pause. Chin level. Shoulders open. The walk of a woman who had never been left.

I was mid-aisle when I heard her voice.

“The south-facing lanterns need to be repositioned eighteen inches toward the cliff edge. They’re creating a shadow line across the fourth row that will read as a lighting malfunction in photographs.”

Nadira Kader moved through the pavilion the way weather moved through a valley — with absolute authority and no interest in whether you were prepared.

She was speaking to two members of her team while simultaneously reviewing something on a tablet, her reading glasses pushed up into her hair. Navy linen suit, tailored so precisely it looked like it had opinions about the body underneath. White silk shirt, open one button further than corporate but not enough to be called deliberate. Dark hair cut to her collarbones, the dramatic silver streak at her left temple catching the last of the daylight like a deliberate flaw in an otherwise flawless surface.

I had been staring at Nadira Kader for eighteen months.

This is just the beginning. The full Chapter One — and twenty more chapters of Carys and Nadira — are waiting.
