Chapter One: The Glass House
The kitchen was buried in cardboard and Mara couldn’t find the wine opener.
She’d packed it herself. She remembered wrapping it in a dish towel and placing it in the box labeled KITCHEN – ESSENTIALS in her own careful handwriting, which meant it could be in any of the fourteen boxes currently stacked against the island like a cardboard barricade. She’d labeled them all ESSENTIALS because she’d been three glasses deep and feeling sentimental about spatulas.
“Hollis.” She peeled back the flaps of a box that turned out to contain nothing but baking sheets and a single oven mitt. “Where’s the—”
“Drawer by the sink.” His voice came from the second floor, distorted by the open stairwell and the acoustics of a house that still smelled like joint compound and new wood. “Left side.”
She opened the drawer. There it sat, clean and ready, because Hollis had already unpacked the drawer organizer, the utensil tray, and apparently every kitchen tool they owned while she’d been photographing the light in the empty living room.
