Chapter One: The Third Key
The woman behind the reception desk recognized them before Julian said his name.
“Mr. Cross.” She came around the counter with her hand already extended, the kind of genuine warmth that couldn’t be trained into hospitality staff. “And Mr. Serrano-Cross. Welcome back to Maravilla Key.”
“Camille.” Mateo pulled her into a hug before she could settle for a handshake. “You look incredible. Is that a new tattoo?”
“Three new ones since your last visit.” She turned her wrist to show a delicate compass rose. “Ten years. I was starting to think we’d lost you to the Amalfi Coast crowd.”
“Never.” Mateo pressed a hand to his chest. “This island had me at the complimentary breakfast buffet.”
Julian watched his husband charm the woman who’d checked them in a decade ago — back when they could barely afford the smallest room in the resort, back when Julian had been two years into building a law firm from nothing and Mateo had been running someone else’s kitchen.
Now they had the oceanfront villa. The one Julian had stared at from across the pool ten years ago, watching couples disappear behind its garden walls, thinking someday.
Someday had arrived, and it had brought company.
“I have a request,” Julian said. “We’ll need three key cards for the villa.”
Camille’s fingers paused over the keyboard. She looked at him — not with judgment, not with curiosity, just with the steady attentiveness of a woman who’d spent two decades managing the private lives of wealthy guests on a small island.
“Three cards. All with villa access?”
“Yes.”
“The third guest’s name?”
“Theodore Bennett. He arrives this afternoon.”
She typed without commentary. The printer hummed and produced three slim black cards. She placed them in a leather folio and slid it across the marble counter.
Camille smiled — the kind of smile that said she understood more than she’d ever acknowledge. “Welcome home, gentlemen.”
The villa was obscene. Not in the trashy way — in the breathtaking, architecturally criminal way that made Julian’s chest tighten with the absurdity of how far they’d come. Floor-to-ceiling glass overlooking the Atlantic. A private infinity pool. An outdoor rainfall shower enclosed by volcanic stone walls but open to the sky.
And the bed. The bed was a California king beneath a canopy of white linen. It could fit four adults comfortably. Julian had checked the dimensions.
“Julian.” Mateo stood in the center of the bedroom with his arms spread wide. “Julian, there are two showerheads. In the indoor shower. There is also an outdoor shower. We have three showers.”
“I’m aware.”
“We had a shower curtain with a mildew stain shaped like Connecticut last time.”
“I remember.”
Mateo dropped onto the bed, bounced twice, and groaned with theatrical pleasure. “This mattress is trying to seduce me and I’m letting it. Tell my family I died happy.”
Mateo found him on the balcony twenty minutes later, two whiskeys in hand, barefoot.
“We should talk.”
“We’ve been talking for fourteen months.”
“We’ve been planning for fourteen months. That’s different. Planning is what you do when you want to control an outcome. Talking is what you do when you admit you can’t.”
“Are we really doing this?” Mateo asked.
“Yes.”
“And if he says no?”
“Then he says no, and we grieve what we wanted, and we keep what we have, and we never make him feel like refusing us cost him a family.”
“I’m scared,” Mateo said. “Not of wanting him. Of wanting him wrong. I want him for me, and I want him for us, and I need him to know the difference.”
Julian kissed his husband. “Then we tell him. And whatever happens, we tell him together.”
His phone buzzed. Theo: Landed. Baggage is taking forever. The airline lost one of my camera cases. Obviously. See you in an hour.
Julian looked at the nightstand. Three black key cards in the leather folio. Two already paired: Cross and Serrano-Cross. The third said Bennett.
In one hour, the light would change. He intended to be ready.
