Butcher & Blackbird Spicy Chapters: Every Scene, Heat Level & Warnings (2026)

Butcher & Blackbird spicy chapters don’t arrive until the back half, and when they do, they arrive in a cluster. Brynne Weaver’s serial-killer rom-com rates 🌶️🌶️🌶️🌶️ Explicit on our five-chili scale: open door, detailed, with praise, rough play and a dom/sub streak, and roughly five spicy chapters plus a bonus chapter. The first half is pure slow burn, years of an annual killing competition between two rivals who refuse to admit what they are. It’s for dark romance readers who want blood, banter and a hero who cooks, and the timing is right: the Ruinous Love trilogy finished with Scythe & Sparrow, and a Butcher & Blackbird movie is in development with Emma Laird and Thomas Doherty cast as Sloane and Rowan. Below: every spicy chapter we could pin down, content warnings, how it compares to the sequels and the other big dark romances, and a bonus scene from our own shelf that runs hotter.

Is Butcher & Blackbird Spicy?

Yes, but late. Sloane and Rowan spend the first half of the book circling each other across one hunt a year, so there’s nothing explicit until roughly 60 percent of the way in. Once they cross the line, the scenes come close together, are fully on the page and lean rough and praise-heavy, which is why some readers say the middle stretch feels like back-to-back sex scenes. Four chilies rather than five: explicit, but the plot and the jokes never step aside for it.

The wait is the point. Sloane is the Orb Weaver, a killer named for the web-spinning spider; Rowan is the Boston Butcher, a chef with a second career hunting predators. They meet when he finds her trapped in another killer’s house, he names her Blackbird, and they agree to one hunt a year, a race to find and kill a serial murderer first. Years of that game pass on the page, from small-town West Virginia to California to Boston, with Rowan sending her groceries and cooking instructions over the phone and Sloane refusing to admit she’d answer any call he made. By the time they finally touch, the reader has been waiting as long as Rowan has, which is why chapter 17 lands the way it does.

Butcher & Blackbird Spicy Chapters List

Guides disagree on this book more than most, so we only give an exact number where at least two sources line up, and say “around” where they don’t. Descriptions are non-graphic and spoiler-light.

  1. Chapter 16: the confession. After a hunt goes badly wrong and Sloane is hurt, Rowan finally says how long he has been waiting for her. This is where the slow burn breaks and the first kiss-to-bed sequence begins. Heated rather than fully explicit.
  2. Chapter 17: the first full scene, while Sloane recovers at Rowan’s brother Fionn’s house in Nebraska. Explicit, long, and the chapter audiobook listeners post about with their jaw on the floor. If you’re looking for “the” spicy chapter in Butcher & Blackbird, and the one readers most often call the hottest, it’s this one.
  3. Around chapters 18 to 19: the morning after and the rest of the Nebraska stay. More explicit time together as the two of them stop pretending this is a one-time thing. Guides split on the exact chapters here.
  4. Around chapter 23: after Sloane moves to Boston, a later scene once they’re living in the same city. Explicit. One guide places it a couple of chapters earlier.
  5. Bonus chapter: some editions and the author’s extras include a bonus chapter that guides also list as spicy. Check your edition.

Content Warnings

This is a book about two serial killers who hunt other serial killers, so the list is long. In brief: graphic murder and gore, torture, eye removal (it’s Sloane’s signature), cannibalism by a villain, drugging, a mummified body, references to past childhood sexual abuse, parental death and neglect, and explicit sex with rough play, choking and dom/sub elements. Weaver posts a full list on her website; read it if any of the above gives you pause.

How Spicy Is Butcher & Blackbird Compared To…

  • Leather & Lark (Ruinous Love #2): 🌶️🌶️🌶️🌶️🌶️ Inferno. Lachlan Kane and Lark Montague in a fake marriage. Often rated the steamiest of the trilogy.
  • Scythe & Sparrow (Ruinous Love #3): 🌶️🌶️🌶️🌶️ Explicit. Fionn Kane and Rose Evans, friends with benefits in small-town Nebraska. Romance-heavy, with the spice spread through the middle of the book.
  • Lights Out (Navessa Allen): 🌶️🌶️🌶️🌶️🌶️ Inferno. The other dark rom-com it’s always paired with. Starts earlier, has more scenes, and runs kinkier.
  • Haunting Adeline (H.D. Carlton): 🌶️🌶️🌶️🌶️🌶️ Inferno and much darker. No comedy, and consent is a lot murkier.
  • Twisted Love (Ana Huang): 🌶️🌶️🌶️🌶️ Explicit. About the same heat with no body count.

Read the Series in Order

The Ruinous Love trilogy is three interconnected standalones about the Kane brothers, each with its own couple and happy ending, best read in publication order because the timelines overlap. Start with Butcher & Blackbird (2023, Sloane and Rowan), then Leather & Lark (2024, Lark and Lachlan), then Scythe & Sparrow (February 2025, Rose and Fionn). When you’ve finished all three, our list of books like Butcher & Blackbird covers the dark rom-coms with the same knives-and-banter energy, and our Lights Out spicy chapters guide covers the book most readers pick up next.

On the screen side, a Butcher & Blackbird movie is in development with Emma Laird as Sloane and Thomas Doherty as Rowan. No release date has been announced, and nobody has said how much of chapter 17 survives the trip to a rating board, so the book is still the version to read first.

If You Wanted It Hotter: A Fractal Enigma Bonus Scene

The best part of Butcher & Blackbird is a dangerous man who is only soft for one woman, and who would cheerfully kill anyone who touched her. Our pick keeps that, swaps the comedy for romantic suspense, and has an exclusive bonus chapter that runs hotter than anything in the novel.

The Witness He Kept — Isla Wilde

The Witness He Kept by Isla Wilde book cover

He was hired to erase her. He kept her instead. Sloane Mercer is a forensic accountant who doesn’t round anything off, and six days into an audit of Halcyon Industrial she finds twelve identical payments of $275,000, one for every worker who died. Dorian is the fixer who built the frame around her. Hidden in a boatyard safehouse with the man who was supposed to make her disappear, she learns exactly how far he’ll go for her. Morally grey, touch-her-and-die, scar worship and praise, with a guaranteed happy ending. Also in audiobook.

The bonus scene: “Released” takes place after the epilogue, on the day Dorian comes home. One paper bag, three hours of road and an iron headboard, with bondage on the page and heat the site itself labels hotter than the book. It spoils the ending, so finish the novel first.

Heat: Inferno 🌶️🌶️🌶️🌶️🌶️
Tropes: Fixer × Witness, Morally Grey Hero, Safehouse, Forced Proximity, He Falls First, Touch Her and Die, Praise Kink, Light Bondage, Scar Worship, Romantic Suspense

The Assassin’s Alibi — Rafe Calder

The queer pick, and the closest thing on our shelf to Rowan Kane. “I fix problems for the Marlow family. I don’t ask what the rooms are for, and I never keep the names.” Then somebody frames him together with the mob lawyer he spent one night with, and the only way out is to stay close to the man he was never supposed to see twice. Killers with banter, grumpy × sunshine, and a hero who switches. It has its own bonus chapter too: “Not on the Table,” the anniversary.

Enemies to lovers, snowed in and very dark, for readers who liked Sloane best when she was furious.

FAQ: Butcher & Blackbird Spicy Chapters

What chapter is the spicy scene in Butcher & Blackbird?

Chapter 17 is the first full scene, at Fionn’s house in Nebraska, with the confession that leads into it in chapter 16. Nothing explicit happens before that.

How many spicy scenes are in Butcher & Blackbird?

Roughly five spicy chapters, plus a bonus chapter in some editions. Most of them sit between chapter 16 and chapter 23, so the heat is concentrated rather than spread out.

Is Butcher & Blackbird dark?

The violence is very dark: torture, gore, eye removal and a cannibal. The tone isn’t. It’s a comedy about two killers falling in love, the couple only targets other killers, and the romance itself is tender. Our romance spice levels guide explains why we rate heat and darkness separately.

Is the sequel spicier?

Yes. Leather & Lark is often rated the spiciest book in the trilogy. Scythe & Sparrow lands closer to Butcher & Blackbird.
