From Blood and Ash Spicy Chapters: Where the Heat Is, Warnings & What’s Next (2026)
From Blood and Ash spicy chapters are all in the back third of the book, which surprises a lot of first-time readers who were promised the steamiest romantasy on BookTok. Jennifer L. Armentrout’s 2020 opener is 🌶️🌶️🌶️🌶️ explicit and open door, with three explicit encounters between Poppy and Hawke plus a handful of charged near-misses, and almost all of it lands after the 60 percent mark. It’s for readers who like a long, forbidden slow burn with a guard who isn’t what he seems, and who don’t mind waiting 400 pages for the payoff. Why now: Sony Pictures Television has a Blood and Ash series in development, Armentrout has confirmed The Throne of Bone and Ash as Poppy and Casteel’s final book, and the bridge novella A Crown of Ruin has readers rereading from the start. Here’s where the heat is, how it compares to Quicksilver and Fourth Wing, the content warnings, the order and a Fractal Enigma bonus scene for the guard-with-a-secret fantasy at full heat.

Is From Blood and Ash Spicy?
Yes, but later than you think. Poppy Balfour is the Maiden, veiled and forbidden to be touched, so the first half of the book is all tension: a kiss in a brothel, a lot of stolen moments with her new guard and an author who knows exactly how long to make you wait. Once the door opens, the scenes are explicit and not short. Reader ratings for book one range from three to three and a half chilies out of five; the series as a whole runs hotter, and the sequel turns it up again.
From Blood and Ash Spicy Chapters List
From Blood and Ash has 41 chapters and around 620 pages in the paperback. Reader lists put the explicit content in chapters 30, 33, 38 and 39, and reader progress logs agree the heat starts around 70 percent of the way through, but we only found one published chapter list, so every number below is marked “around.” Spoiler-light, non-graphic.
- Early chapters, the Red Pearl: The first kiss. Poppy sneaks out of Castle Teerman to the Red Pearl, a brothel, unveiled and unrecognized, and ends up in a room with Hawke before either of them knows who the other is. A real kiss and a little more before they’re interrupted. Two chilies.
- Around the halfway point, the willow tree: After the Rite is attacked, Poppy and Hawke end up under a willow tree, and it’s the first time she lets him close knowing exactly who he is. Heavy making out, no sex. Two chilies. Readers who’ve finished the book never look at a willow the same way.
- Around Chapter 30: The first explicit chapter. On the road to the capital, Hawke offers to show Poppy exactly what the Maiden has been forbidden, and she says yes. Open door, hands only. Three to four chilies.
- Around Chapter 33: The first full scene. After an ambush on the way to New Haven, they finally sleep together. Explicit, emotional and the scene most readers mean when they say the book gets spicy. Four chilies.
- Around Chapters 38 and 39: The hottest and most complicated scene in the book. After the big reveal about who Hawke really is, everything has changed, the trust is gone, the attraction isn’t, and it ends in the snow. Four chilies, plus a heavy dose of blood and feeding.
Count: three explicit encounters, two charged kissing scenes, nothing explicit before the second half. Your edition’s chapter numbers may differ by one either way, especially in special editions with extra material.
Why the First Half Is So Slow
It’s the premise. The Maiden can’t be seen, spoken to or touched, she’s been punished for less, and Hawke is a guard who would lose everything for crossing the line. Armentrout spends the first 300 pages making the forbidden part feel real: the veil, the Duke, the Ascended who decide what Poppy is allowed to want. A Goodreads reader halfway through asked whether they were ever going to sleep together; another at 70 percent asked whether this counted as spicy. Both questions get answered in the last third. If you’re reading for the slow burn, it’s one of the best in the genre. If you’re reading for spice alone, start skimming less around chapter 28.
Content Warnings
- Graphic violence and battle scenes, including attacks by the Craven
- Death of loved ones, including a mentor figure
- Physical and emotional abuse of Poppy by the Duke who controls her household
- Children taken from their families in the Rite
- Blood drinking and feeding, including a scene where Poppy is made to drink blood to save her life
- Deception and betrayal by the love interest, and Poppy held against her will after the reveal
- Explicit sex between adults
How Spicy Is From Blood and Ash Compared To…
- A Court of Thorns and Roses 🌶️🌶️🌶️: Similar number of scenes, but From Blood and Ash goes further on the page. The better match is ACOMAF, and our ACOTAR spicy chapters guide has the Maas breakdown.
- Quicksilver 🌶️🌶️🌶️🌶️: Almost identical heat and pace. Callie Hart gets to her first full scene earlier, at chapter 22; Armentrout’s are more emotional and more about blood.
- Fourth Wing 🌶️🌶️🌶️🌶️: Fourth Wing has three spicy chapters (22, 30 and 32) to From Blood and Ash’s three or four, and Violet gets there sooner. Equal heat once they do.
- A Kingdom of Flesh and Fire 🌶️🌶️🌶️🌶️: Book two is hotter. Poppy and Casteel aren’t forbidden anymore, they’re furious, and the scenes come faster and more often. Reader guides rate it four out of five.
- Twilight 🌶️: If you came here from Edward and Bella, this is the grown-up version. Our books like Twilight for adults list has more.

FAQ: From Blood and Ash Spicy Chapters
What chapter is the spicy scene in From Blood and Ash?
The first explicit chapter is around chapter 30, the first full sex scene is around chapter 33, and the most intense scene comes around chapters 38 and 39, after the reveal. The first kiss is at the Red Pearl, early in the book.
How many spicy scenes are in From Blood and Ash?
Three explicit encounters plus two make-out scenes (the Red Pearl and the willow tree). All the explicit content is in the last quarter of the book.
Is From Blood and Ash dark?
Darker than its first half suggests. There’s abuse from the Duke, child sacrifice in the Rite, a lot of death and a love interest who has been lying to Poppy from the start. The romance itself is consensual; the betrayal is the darkest part.
Is the sequel spicier?
Yes. A Kingdom of Flesh and Fire has more scenes, earlier and at a higher heat, and the series keeps climbing; The Primal of Blood and Bone has six spicy chapters. If book one felt like a tease, book two is the payoff.
