Casey McQuiston Books in Order: Where to Start

Start with Red, White & Royal Blue. It’s the debut, the phenomenon, the Prime Video movie and the book the new Private Correspondence continues, so it’s the only McQuiston title where order matters. After that, pick by mood: One Last Stop for sapphic found family and a love story with a time-travel mystery, The Pairing for exes, Europe, food, wine and the most heat, I Kissed Shara Wheeler if you want a YA rom-com.

McQuiston’s novels aren’t a series. Each one is a standalone with its own couple, its own city and its own ending. The only direct sequel is The Private Correspondence, which needs Red, White & Royal Blue first.

Every Casey McQuiston Novel in Order

  1. Red, White & Royal Blue (May 2019): Alex Claremont-Diaz, the son of the first woman President of the United States, has a public altercation with Prince Henry of England that becomes an international incident. The fix is a staged friendship for the cameras. The staged truce turns into a secret relationship, carried on in emails, that could upend two nations. MM, enemies to lovers, and the book that took queer romance mainstream. Our books like Red, White & Royal Blue list has the readalikes.
  2. One Last Stop (2021): August, a cynical twenty-three-year-old, moves to New York, acquires a chaotic found family of roommates and falls for Jane, the impossibly cool girl on her subway commute, who turns out to be displaced in time from the 1970s and unable to leave the train. Sapphic, warm and the most romantic thing McQuiston has written. Our books like One Last Stop guide picks up from here.
  3. I Kissed Shara Wheeler (2022): with graduation weeks away, Shara Wheeler kisses Chloe and vanishes, leaving a trail of clues. Chloe teams up with Smith and Rory, two other people Shara kissed, to find her. McQuiston’s only YA book, a queer rom-com mystery for readers 12 and up, and closed door.
  4. The Pairing (August 6, 2024): Theo and Kit, childhood best friends turned exes, were supposed to take a European food-and-wine tour together before they broke up. Four years later, each uses the expiring voucher separately and they end up on the same tour bus. Theo, an aspiring sommelier, proposes a wager on which of them can sleep with their Italian tour guide first. Bisexual leads on both sides, and McQuiston called it their spiciest book. Our books like The Pairing list has more.
  5. Red, White & Royal Blue: The Private Correspondence (December 1, 2026): after the email leak that outed them to the world, Alex and Henry swore off email for anything personal and went back to handwritten letters. This epistolary novella collects twenty years of their letters, postcards and journal entries, from sarcasm and flirting to conversations about starting a family, with glimpses of the supporting cast along the way. St. Martin’s Press, 304 pages, in a deluxe hardcover with designed edges and floral endpapers. The audiobook features Ben Balmaceda as Alex and Ben Starr as Henry.

McQuiston also has a short story in the 2022 anthology Eternally Yours, edited by Patricia Caldwell.

Casey McQuiston Books by Mood and Heat

McQuiston writes open-door romance with the sex on the page but not the anatomy, more about what the moment means than how it’s choreographed. Here’s how the books compare.

  • Red, White & Royal Blue: 🌶️🌶️🌶️ open door. Enemies to lovers, secret relationship, politics, a prince. Banter-heavy, very funny, and the emails are the love story.
  • One Last Stop: 🌶️🌶️🌶️ open door. Found family, a mystery to solve, a romance with an impossible obstacle. The one that makes people cry on public transit.
  • I Kissed Shara Wheeler: 🌶️ closed door. A YA scavenger hunt before graduation, more friendship and identity than romance.
  • The Pairing: 🌶️🌶️🌶️🌶️ explicit. Second chance, travel, food and wine, a hookup competition, and the most sex of any McQuiston book.
  • The Private Correspondence: a letters-only epilogue to Red, White & Royal Blue, about a long marriage rather than a new romance.

Finished all of them? The closest trad match for Red, White & Royal Blue is Alexis Hall’s Boyfriend Material, another fake relationship built for the press that turns real, and our books like Boyfriend Material list goes deeper on that shelf. If One Last Stop was the one that got you, the sapphic picks in our books like The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo guide are a good next stop.

The Red, White & Royal Blue Movies

The first film premiered on Prime Video in August 2023, with Taylor Zakhar Perez as Alex and Nicholas Galitzine as Henry, and was nominated for Outstanding Television Movie at the 76th Primetime Emmy Awards.

The sequel, Red, White & Royal Wedding, was confirmed in May 2024 and got its title in October 2025. Jamie Babbit directs from a script by Matthew López, Gemma Burgess and McQuiston, who also executive produces alongside returning producers Greg Berlanti and Sarah Schechter. Filming ran from January to March 2026 in England. Zakhar Perez and Galitzine return, along with Uma Thurman, Sarah Shahi and Rachel Hilson, and the new faces include Lena Headey, Chloe Fineman and Alex Høgh Andersen. Despite the title, the wedding isn’t Alex and Henry’s: the cast has said it’s Princess Beatrice’s, and the film follows the couple settling into life in New York, with Alex now through law school.

At Prime Video’s Obsessed Fest in June, McQuiston said the sequel is “a couple degrees spicier” than the first, and in October it was rated R for sexual content, nudity and language. Prime Video hasn’t announced a release date yet. The Private Correspondence, out December 1, is the only new Alex and Henry you can get your hands on this year.
