She called it curiosity. The redhead called her bluff.
Dr. Iona Mercer does not have time for distractions. She has six months left in emergency-medicine residency, a career-defining position within reach, and a life constructed around never needing more than she can control.
Then her roommate’s older sister moves in.
Roux Delacourt has vivid red hair, tattooed skin, and a reputation for treating commitment like an allergic reaction. She is confident, openly bisexual, and completely unimpressed by Iona’s insistence that her staring is merely professional curiosity.
When Iona finally admits she has wondered about women for years, she asks Roux for one kiss.
Roux refuses.
She has been another woman’s temporary experiment before, and she will not repeat the experience for a beautiful doctor planning to return to her respectable life afterward.
So Iona proposes rules. Six weeks. Clear boundaries. No promises. No shame. No pretending either woman cannot walk away.
Their first kiss confirms Iona’s attraction. Their first night destroys her belief that desire is something she can schedule. And when the supposedly inexperienced doctor begins using Roux’s own lessons against her, the fearless redhead discovers that physical surrender is far easier than believing someone might choose her permanently.

Chapter One: The Redhead in the Kitchen
The elevator is broken again.
I take the stairs two at a time because my legs still have the memory of urgency in them, even though the shift ended forty minutes ago and the patient I couldn’t save has been transferred to the morgue and the three I did save are stable and monitored and no longer mine. My calves burn by the second landing. My scrubs smell like adrenaline and iodine and the particular sourness that twelve hours of sustained crisis leaves on skin. I haven’t eaten since a granola bar at 6 p.m., and that was nine hours and one death ago.
Third floor. Keys. Lock. The apartment should be dark.
Maeve goes to bed by eleven on weeknights. She keeps architect’s hours — up at six, asleep by eleven, the kind of schedule that implies a life organized around something other than catastrophe. I’m usually grateful for the darkness. It means I can stand in the kitchen in the blue glow of the microwave clock and eat cold leftovers without performing the version of myself that answers “How was your shift?” with something other than the truth.
Tonight the apartment is not dark.
Light spills from the kitchen — warm, amber, the overhead fixture I never use because the fluorescent at the hospital has ruined all other artificial light for me. There’s music, too. Something French and low, a woman’s voice over an acoustic guitar, playing from a phone propped against the fruit bowl.
And there’s a woman standing at my stove.
She’s barefoot. That’s the first thing I register, which is absurd because there are larger details competing for attention, but my brain latches onto her bare feet on the tile and the dark red polish on her toenails and the way she’s standing with one foot angled against the opposite calf, casual as a heron. She’s wearing a black camisole — thin-strapped, silk or something that behaves like silk — and Maeve’s grey robe, hanging open over it, the belt trailing. Her hair is the color of new copper, thick and heavy with natural waves, falling past her shoulder blades. She’s shorter than me by several inches, but the way she occupies the space around the stove suggests someone who has never once considered making herself smaller.
She’s stirring something in the pot with a wooden spoon. The kitchen smells like garlic and thyme and butter.
I am standing in my own doorway at two in the morning, and I have no idea who this woman is, and I cannot stop staring at the freckles on her shoulders.
“You must be the doctor.”
She turns. Green eyes — vivid, amused, framed by thick auburn lashes that match the impossible hair. More freckles across her nose and cheekbones, scattered like someone flicked a paintbrush at her. A full mouth pulled into a half-smile that suggests she’s been expecting me and has already decided something about the encounter that I haven’t caught up to yet.
There’s a tattoo beneath her left camisole strap. A small fox, fine-lined, curled beneath her collarbone with its tail disappearing toward her sternum. And over her right shoulder, visible where Maeve’s robe has slipped, something larger — dark ink, a branch winding over the curve of muscle, thorned and intricate.
She holds the wooden spoon with long fingers. There’s a faint scar across two of them — a burn, healed but visible — and she wears three silver rings that catch the kitchen light.
“I’m Roux.” She says it like the color. Like something warm. “Maeve’s sister. She said you’d be late, but I wasn’t expecting this late. You look like you’ve been through something.”
