The alarm went off at 4:45 AM and Nolan Cross was vertical before the second beep.

Not because he was a morning person. He was categorically, biologically, spiritually not a morning person. He was a person who’d calculated that if he left his apartment by 5:10, hit the bodega on Lexington by 5:18, and caught the express elevator before the security desk shift change at 5:35, he could be seated at his desk outside Vivienne Ashcroft’s corner office a full fifty-five minutes before anyone else on the forty-second floor arrived.
