She paid for the fantasy. Love was never included.
Nyra Quinn is a forty-five-year-old tech billionaire weeks away from the biggest acquisition of her career when her board decides her severe, solitary image is making investors nervous. They want proof she’s stable, personable, capable of human connection. Nyra refuses to fake a conventional romance. Instead, she hires an expert.
Aster Vale is a thirty-year-old elite companion known for transforming difficult public figures into convincing, attentive partners. Her month-long contract covers investor dinners, international travel, public affection, private intimacy, and the appearance of complete devotion. It does not cover jealousy, exclusivity, emotional promises, or access to Aster’s real life.
Nyra agrees because rules have always made desire manageable. But Aster is exceptionally skilled at identifying exactly what Nyra needs — praise without flattery, touch without demand, silence without abandonment, intimacy that never requires Nyra to perform power. Nyra extends the contract once. Then again. Then she discovers Aster has another client booked the week after their arrangement ends.
For the first time in her adult life, Nyra wants something money can’t guarantee. And when a rival executive leaks their contract to sabotage the acquisition, Nyra can protect her company by calling Aster a paid performer — or risk everything by admitting what both of them already know.

Chapter One: The Stability Problem
The building looked better at night.
Thirty-two floors of reinforced glass and brushed steel, emptied of every human being except me and the security team I paid to pretend they didn’t notice how often the lights on the top floor stayed on past midnight. During the day, Quinn Vector hummed with twelve hundred employees, ringing phones, the particular chaos of people who believed they were building something that mattered. At night it was mine. Quiet. Controllable. The way I preferred most things.
I stood at the window with my reading glasses pushed into my hair and a glass of whiskey I’d poured forty minutes ago and hadn’t touched. Below me, the city performed its usual routine of taxis and bar lines and couples walking too close together on sidewalks designed for single-file traffic. I watched a woman laugh at something her companion said, her head tipping back, her hand finding the other woman’s arm with the kind of effortless contact that suggested she didn’t have to think about where to put it.
I couldn’t remember the last time I’d touched someone without thinking about where to put my hand.
My reflection stared back at me from the glass — dark suit, sharp jaw, silver creeping through the temples of a haircut that cost four hundred dollars and looked like it cost nothing. Every technology profile written about me in the last five years had used the same vocabulary. Formidable. Precise. Solitary. The Financial Times had called me “aggressively competent,” which I’d framed. The New Yorker had called me “constitutionally incapable of small talk,” which I hadn’t framed but privately agreed with.
None of them had ever called me unstable.
Until now.
“Go ahead.”
“I’m sending you a media analysis packet. You’ll want to read it before the board call tomorrow.”
“Summarize.”
“The activist group led by Hargrove and Chen has been feeding financial journalists a narrative about your personal life. Or rather, the absence of one.” Verity’s voice was clipped, precise, faintly Scottish. “The angle is that your inability to maintain personal relationships signals poor emotional judgment and governance risk. They’re positioning it as a pattern rather than a preference.”
“My personal life has nothing to do with—”
“I agree. I’m telling you what they’re saying, not endorsing it. Three investor meetings this week referenced concerns about your ‘temperament.’ That’s a coordinated word. Someone is feeding it to them.”
“Relationship visibility strategy. Their words, not mine.”
“Meaning they want evidence that you’re capable of sustained human connection beyond quarterly earnings calls. The Aegis Arc vote is six weeks out.”
“I won’t deceive anyone,” I said. “I won’t parade a woman through investor dinners and pretend I’m in love.”
“No one’s asking you to fall in love, Nyra. They’re asking you to appear capable of it.”

Six months after the epilogue, Nyra and Aster return to the Hotel Lutetia — the same suite, the same city, no contract. Mirror play, the strap, praise that makes both of them cry, and a bathtub conversation that changes everything permanently.
