One hundred and forty-seven.
That was the number Camille Laurent carried through the terminal at LaGuardia, her rolling bag ticking seams in the carpet behind her like a metronome counting down to nothing in particular. One hundred and forty-seven nights in hotels this calendar year.
She collected the numbers the way other people collected hobbies. Loyalty points across six programs. Fourteen time zones in the last quarter. Two women she’d slept with since January, both encounters so efficient they might as well have been meetings — agenda, execution, polite follow-up, file closed.
The Meridian appeared through the cab window like a promise she’d made to herself. Twelve stories of brushed limestone and warm light, a canopy with brass fixtures, a doorman who knew her name. Not because she was important. Because she was frequent.
And behind the front desk, in the navy blazer that never quite sat right on her shoulders, Rae Morales.
