Chapter One: Curb Appeal
The peonies were dying.
Not slowly, not gracefully, not in any way that could be spun into rustic charm. The refrigeration unit in the venue’s service corridor had failed sometime around 3 AM, and by the time I arrived at six-thirty for final staging, two hundred and forty stems of imported Coral Charm peonies had gone from blowsy perfection to damp, browning ruin.
The wedding was in four hours.
“Priya,” I said when she picked up. “I need you at the Whitmore estate in twenty minutes with the emergency vehicle.”
Priya paused long enough for me to hear her coffee maker in the background. “I’ll bring shears.”
The bride cried when she saw them. “They’re even better than the mockups.”
“Of course they are,” I said. “This is what I do.”
What I didn’t say: This is all I do. Plan other people’s perfect beginnings. Manufacture beauty out of minor catastrophe.
I was not out here because of the garden. I was out here because at approximately six-twenty every weekday morning, a black pickup truck pulled into the driveway next door, and a woman got out of it who made me feel like I was nineteen years old and didn’t know a single true thing about myself.
Tavi stepped out. Work boots, dark green cargo pants, a gray tank top that showed the botanical tattoos winding up her left forearm. She reached into the truck bed and swung a beam onto her shoulder with an ease that made the muscles in her back shift visibly beneath the fabric.
She turned. Caught me. Direct eye contact across thirty feet of ruined fence line.
“You need a contractor,” she said, glancing at the carriage house, “or a better curtain?”
Eighty-eight days to save my house. I had a terrible feeling the house was the least of what I was about to lose.
