Chapter One: The Contractor
The lodge looked like a woman who’d been beautiful once and had stopped trying.
I pulled into the gravel lot and killed the engine, letting the quiet settle. October in the Adirondacks was absurdly gorgeous — the kind of foliage that made people drive three hours from the city just to take photos they’d never look at again — and the morning light hit the lakefront property like it was auditioning for a tourism campaign. Golden hour at nine a.m. The lake behind the building was flat and silver, ringed with maples going red and orange, and the air smelled like cold water and decaying leaves and the particular sweetness of wood that had been weathering for a century.
The building itself was another story.
Three stories of Adirondack Great Camp architecture: hand-hewn log walls, a wraparound porch with half its railings missing, cedar-shake roof patched in three different decades’ worth of materials. The original stone chimney was intact, which was a minor miracle. The windows were a disaster — some boarded, some replaced with vinyl that clashed with everything, a few of the original wavy-glass panes still holding on through spite alone.
I loved it immediately.
