He moved in with his best friend. He fell for his best friend’s dad.

Noah Carter is twenty-two, broke, and out of options. When his best friend offers him the spare room at his dad’s house for the summer, Noah says yes before he thinks about why that might be a terrible idea.

The reason is Daniel Hayes. Forty-four. Divorced. A general contractor with steady hands, quiet authority, and the kind of calm that makes Noah’s entire nervous system recalibrate. He’s also Ethan’s father — which makes him the one person Noah absolutely cannot want.

He wants him anyway.

What starts as accidental proximity — shared hallways, late-night kitchens, a brush of hands on a duffel strap — becomes something neither of them can stop. Daniel has spent twenty years not reaching for what he wants. Noah has spent his whole life waiting for someone to reach for him. When the dam finally breaks, it breaks completely.

But their secret has a time limit. Ethan sleeps twenty feet away. The summer is half over. And every stolen night brings them closer to the moment when they’ll have to choose: stay hidden, or risk everything for a love that was never supposed to happen.

Chapter One: The Spare Room

Two duffel bags. That was the sum total of my life at twenty-two. Two duffel bags, a maxed-out credit card, and the kind of shame that sat in your chest like a stone you couldn’t cough up.

I pulled into Daniel Hayes’s driveway at eleven in the morning on a Tuesday in June, driving a Honda Civic with a cracked windshield and an air conditioner that had given up somewhere around Syracuse. My t-shirt was stuck to my back. My hair was doing whatever it wanted, which was a lot, because humidity turned my curls into something between “artistic” and “electrocuted.” I sat in the car for a full minute, hands on the wheel, telling myself this was temporary.

Temporary. A few weeks. Maybe a couple months. Just until I found a job, an apartment, a reason to believe my business degree was worth the sixty thousand dollars of debt I’d taken on to get it.

Ethan had offered the spare room like it was nothing. “Dude, my dad’s got a whole empty bedroom. He won’t care. Come stay, figure your shit out, it’ll be like a summer vacation.” He’d said it over the phone while I was staring at my lease expiration notice, and I’d said yes before I could think about why saying yes to living in my best friend’s dad’s house might be a bad idea.

I grabbed my bags from the back seat, slung one over each shoulder, and walked up the front path. The house was a craftsman — dark green siding, white trim, a wide porch with two Adirondack chairs and a pot of something flowering that someone actually watered. It looked like a home. A real one. The kind I’d never had.

I rang the bell.

The door opened, and two years collapsed into nothing.

Daniel Hayes stood in the doorway in a gray t-shirt and jeans, sawdust on his forearms, a dish towel thrown over one shoulder. He was forty-four. I knew that because Ethan had mentioned his birthday in April. Forty-four looked good on him. Forty-four looked devastating on him. He was taller than I remembered — six-one, maybe six-two — with shoulders that filled the doorframe and the kind of forearms you got from actually using your hands for a living. His hair was dark, shorter on the sides, going silver at the temples. His jaw had a day’s worth of stubble. His eyes were the same color as Ethan’s — warm brown — but on Daniel they didn’t look friendly.

They looked steady. Focused. Like he was taking a measurement.

“Noah.” He said my name like a statement, not a greeting. His voice was lower than I remembered. The kind of low that lived in your ribs.

“Hey, Mr. Hayes.” I adjusted the duffel on my shoulder because I needed something to do with my body.

The corner of his mouth twitched. “Daniel. Mr. Hayes was my father, and he was an asshole. Come in.”
