Chapter One: Six Months Left
The coffee in Lakehurst’s Homicide Unit hadn’t improved in thirty years, and neither had my reasons for drinking it. I took another sip anyway, because the alternative was admitting that the tremor in my left hand had nothing to do with caffeine and everything to do with the fact that I was about to tell the only person in this building whose opinion I actually respected that I was leaving.
“I’m putting in my papers,” I said.
Nia stopped chewing. “Six months.”
“That’s what they call it when you stop showing up and they send you checks.”
The heat arrived without warning. My face flushed. My body turned into a goddamn furnace.
“It’s hot in here,” I said. Nia glanced at the thermostat. “It’s sixty-eight degrees.” “Then the thermostat is broken.”
My phone rang. Dispatch. Construction crew at the Vale Textile Mill. Possible human remains. At the scene: skeletal remains beneath a sealed section of flooring. I saw the pendant before formal ID. Becca Nolan wore that pendant in every photograph from 2005.
“Detective Morales.” The voice stopped me like a bullet. Dr. Vivian Hart stood ten feet away, silver-haired and tall, looking at me with gray-green eyes that held the devastating calm of a woman who knew exactly who she’d find.
Twenty-one years since she’d walked out. My body remembered before my brain gave it permission. Some cases you solve. Some cases solve you.
