They know every weakness in the other woman’s professional armor. A snowed-in retreat gives them just enough time to discover the person beneath it—and enough danger to ruin everything when they return to court.

Talia Brooks has two rules: never trust a prosecutor, and never let Assistant District Attorney Adrienne Vale get under her skin. Unfortunately, Adrienne has been under her skin for six years.

Adrienne Vale does not lose control. She does not beg. She certainly does not let the woman who destroys her in court destroy her in other ways. Except she does. Thoroughly.

After their latest courtroom showdown goes viral, both offices ship them to a mandatory restorative-justice retreat in the mountains. Talia expects bad workshops and worse coffee. She does not expect a blizzard. She definitely does not expect one cabin, one bed, a bottle of whiskey, and Adrienne finally saying what every furious courtroom glance has been hiding.

But when they return to the city, a politically explosive case lands them on opposite sides again—and the man who controls Adrienne’s promotion will use every weapon, including their relationship, to get his conviction.

To have any future, they’ll have to decide whether justice can survive desire—or whether choosing each other means losing everything they’ve built.

Chapter One: Objection Sustained

The thing about Adrienne Vale was that she never raised her voice.

Other prosecutors shouted. They pounded tables, jabbed fingers at witnesses, played to the gallery like second-rate actors doing dinner theater. Adrienne didn’t need any of that. She stood at her table in a charcoal suit that probably cost more than my monthly rent, her dark hair pulled into a ponytail so severe it could’ve cut glass, and she dismantled my arguments with the calm precision of a surgeon removing a tumor she found personally distasteful.

I hated her for it. Had hated her for six years. Hated the way she made every objection sound like a reasonable observation rather than a weapon. Hated the way judges leaned forward when she spoke, nodding along like she was explaining gravity instead of arguing that my client deserved to rot.

Mostly, I hated that she was usually good enough to make me fight for every inch.

Today she was better than good. She was devastating.

“Your Honor, the State’s plea offer reflects the severity of the charges and the weight of the evidence,” Adrienne said, her voice carrying through Judge Okafor’s courtroom without effort. “Mr. Cole was found in possession of a controlled substance with intent to distribute. The arresting officers observed the transaction in progress. The plea to a reduced charge with a recommended sentence of eighteen months represents significant leniency.”

Eighteen months. For Marcus Cole, who was twenty-two, had no priors, had been holding a bag for a friend—the oldest story in criminal defense, except sometimes it was actually true—and would lose his scholarship, his apartment, and any shot at the life he was building if he spent a year and a half upstate.

Significant leniency. I wanted to throw something.

Instead, I stood. Straightened my jacket. Felt the familiar click of my combat boots on the courtroom floor as I moved to the podium.

“Your Honor, with respect to Ms. Vale’s characterization of the State’s generosity, the defense would like to point out that offering someone a slightly smaller cage is not the same as justice.”

A ripple went through the gallery. I didn’t look at them. I looked at Judge Okafor, who was watching me with the expression of a man who’d seen a thousand lawyers grandstand and was waiting to see if I had substance behind the style.

I did. I always did.

Adrienne’s pen stopped moving. I caught the pause from the corner of my eye and felt a hot pulse of satisfaction.

“Furthermore,” I continued, “the quantity in question—four grams—falls below the threshold that typically triggers intent-to-distribute charges in this jurisdiction. The State has inflated the charges based on proximity to a school zone, despite the fact that the school in question closed eighteen months ago and currently operates as a storage facility for the Department of Sanitation.”

That one landed. I could feel it. Judge Okafor’s eyebrows rose a fraction.

Adrienne stood. She didn’t hurry. She never hurried.

“Ms. Brooks is a talented advocate,” Adrienne said, and her voice carried just the faintest edge. “But talent is not a substitute for statute.”

The gallery murmured. I felt my jaw tighten.

Talented advocate. From Adrienne Vale, that was the equivalent of a backhand compliment wrapped in silk.

I stood again without waiting for Judge Okafor to invite me. “If the prosecution is finished complimenting me, I’d like to address the substance of her argument rather than the spectacle.”

“The State isn’t offering leniency. The State is offering the appearance of mercy while pursuing a disproportionate outcome for a first-time offender who poses no threat to public safety. And Ms. Vale knows it.”

The courtroom went silent. The kind of silence that has texture.

Adrienne’s chair scraped as she stood. “Objection. Counsel is impugning the integrity of the prosecution.”

“Counsel is doing her job.”

Judge Okafor’s gavel cracked like a gunshot.

“That is enough. Both of you.”

He stood. The courtroom stirred. And I made the mistake of looking at Adrienne.

She was already looking at me.

Her gray eyes were bright with fury. But underneath the fury—beneath the composure that was cracking for perhaps the first time I’d ever witnessed—there was something else.

Heat.

My phone buzzed. Maya had texted: “You’re trending. Also Adrienne Vale looked like she wanted to either kill you or kiss you, and I need you to sit with that.”
