She came for the honey. She stayed for the hands.
Riley Chen is a burned-out corporate lawyer who hasn’t slept through the night in months. After a panic attack on a client call forces her into medical leave, she books a farm-stay in Vermont because it looks peaceful on Instagram. She expects yoga and artisanal cheese plates. She does not expect 5 a.m. chores and a hot grumpy woman in Carhartts.
Maggie Hart runs a small sustainable dairy farm and honey operation with rough hands, a stubborn jaw, and the emotional availability of a fence post. She’s been alone since the last woman she loved called the farm “your real relationship” and left on a Tuesday in February. She’s not looking for another city girl who’ll treat her life like a cute detour.
But Riley keeps showing up. For the mornings. For the goats. For the honey that tastes like the land itself. And when Maggie’s hands close over hers during a milking lesson and neither of them pulls away, what starts as “we’ll keep this simple” becomes the most complicated, most honest, most devastating thing either of them has ever felt.
When the farm’s future is threatened by a developer’s offer and Riley’s old career comes calling with the promotion of a lifetime, they’ll have to decide: play it safe, or fight for the life they’re building — the land, the honey, and each other.

Chapter One: Rest Stop
The fluorescent light above the bathroom sink buzzed like something dying.
Riley Chen gripped the edges of the porcelain and stared at herself in the mirror — mascara she’d applied nine hours ago migrating south, silk blouse wrinkled where the seatbelt had creased it, jaw clenched so tight her molars ached. She looked like a woman on the news. The kind where the anchor says sources close to the family say she showed no signs and everyone at home nods, unsurprised.
Her phone sat on the sink ledge. Forty-seven unread emails. Three texts from Marcus in litigation asking if she’d reviewed the Kessler brief. A voicemail from her mother she couldn’t listen to right now or possibly ever.
She’d pulled off the highway twenty minutes ago because her hands had started shaking on the steering wheel and the road had gone swimmy, and some last-functioning corner of her brain had said pull over before you kill someone, you absolute disaster. So here she was. A gas station bathroom somewhere in rural Vermont that smelled like industrial cleaner and someone’s poor life choices, having what her therapist would gently call a physiological stress response and what Riley called falling apart in a place that doesn’t even have two-ply.
