Her ex’s mother. Her client. Her worst idea. Her only chance.
Jules Rivera is a tattoo artist with a growing career, a reputation for bold florals and body-reclamation work, and one hard rule: she does not date clients. When elegant recent divorcee Vivian Hartwell hires Jules for a private multi-session tattoo at her Finger Lakes lake house, Jules expects a demanding rich woman with a Pinterest board.
Vivian Hartwell is forty-nine, newly divorced, and desperate to become someone of her own making. She wants a massive, unapologetic tattoo across the body she spent twenty years dressing to look unobtrusive. She doesn’t want tasteful. She wants something that can’t be ignored.
Then Jules recognizes the photos in the foyer. Vivian is the mother of Sloane Hartwell — Jules’s college ex, the woman who broke up with her because she couldn’t be publicly out. The woman who called Jules “a phase.”
Vivian should fire Jules. Jules should walk away. Instead, Vivian says the one thing Jules has never heard from anyone in that house: “I remember you. I thought you were wonderful.”
The professional relationship becomes friendship. Friendship becomes tension. A storm floods Jules’s apartment and forces her into Vivian’s guesthouse. And when the ex arrives for a month-long stay, both women must decide whether the risk is worth ruining the image of the family — and whether Sloane has the right to define either woman’s future.

Chapter One: Ink, Actually
The trick to tattooing over scar tissue is knowing when to shut up and when to talk.
Right now, with my machine buzzing steady and three hours of line work behind us, Karen Dominguez needed me to talk. Not about the tattoo—she’d stopped asking about that somewhere around hour two, once she realized I wasn’t going to fuck it up. She needed me to talk about anything else so she could stop thinking about the fact that a stranger was touching the parts of her body she hadn’t let anyone see in four years.
“—and then she said, and I am not exaggerating, she said my aura was interfering with the creative process.” I switched to my 7-round shader and leaned in closer to the scar line that ran beneath her left collarbone. “Dani, back me up.”
From the front desk, visible through the open studio door, Dani Cho didn’t look up from her laptop. “She absolutely said that.”
“An aura. Interfering.” Karen’s laugh was small, careful—she was trying not to move her chest—but real. “What did you do?”
“I told her my aura was Puerto Rican and Mexican and had been interfering with white women’s creative processes since birth, and if she wanted a tattoo from someone whose energy matched her vibe, there was a guy in the strip mall next to the Arby’s who did tribal butterflies for forty bucks.”
