She signed a contract for money. She stayed for the woman.

Emory Sato is broke, overqualified, and one overdraft away from losing everything. When a discreet companionship listing promises eight thousand dollars a month for six months of availability, she tells herself it’s survival math. Sign the NDA. Wear the dress. Don’t catch feelings.

Vivian Cross is the CFO of a publicly traded tech company, forty-four, impeccably controlled, and twelve years past believing in love. She’s had three previous arrangements. All ended cleanly, professionally, on schedule. She doesn’t do girlfriends. She does contracts.

Emory was supposed to be iteration four. Instead, she’s the woman who says I’ll be honest with you in the interview and means it. The one who pushes back on the rules. The one who makes Vivian laugh at her own kitchen island and forget to manage the room when she’s nearby.

But the contract has an end date. The board is asking questions. And when a blind item threatens to expose the arrangement, Vivian does what she always does: retreats into structure and silence. Emory has to decide if she’s willing to walk away from the money, the penthouse, and the woman she loves to prove that what they have can survive without a clause to hold it together.

Chapter One: Overdraft Notice

The number on Emory’s phone screen glowed like a small, personal insult.

Negative forty-seven dollars and twelve cents.

She stared at it from her pillow at 2:14 AM, the banking app’s cheerful green interface doing absolutely nothing to soften the blow. The minus sign sat there, stubborn and red, daring her to do math she already knew the answer to. Rent was due in nine days. Her checking account was not only empty — it had gone past empty into some financial underworld where her money owed money.

She closed the app. Opened it again. Still negative. She wasn’t sure what she’d expected. A miracle. A glitch. A benevolent hacker who targeted struggling twenty-three-year-olds with communications degrees and no prospects.

Her phone buzzed. A text from her mom, sent an hour ago — her mom kept odd hours since the insomnia started, which had started around the same time as the prescriptions, which had started around the same time as the diagnosis she refused to name out loud.

Hey baby. Don’t worry about this month. I know things are tight. Love you.

Which was her mom’s way of saying she needed money and was too proud to ask directly. The subtext screamed through the casual phrasing like a siren: I need help and I’m telling you not to help because that’s easier than admitting I’m drowning too.

The coffee shop was called Groundwork, which Emory privately thought was the most aggressively Portland name a business could have without literally being called Artisanal Suffering. It occupied the ground floor of a converted Victorian in the Alberta Arts District, served fourteen-dollar oat milk lattes to people who complained about capitalism, and was managed by a nineteen-year-old named Bryce who had been promoted to shift lead three months ago and had been absolutely insufferable about it ever since.

“You’re two minutes late,” Bryce said when Emory pushed through the back door at 6:32 AM, still pulling her apron over her head.

“My bus was late.”

“That’s not really my problem, Emory. I need you on bar by six-thirty. We’ve talked about this.”

They had not talked about this. What had happened was that Bryce had started noting her arrival times in a composition notebook he kept behind the register, which he referred to as his “accountability log” and which Emory referred to, privately, as Exhibit A in the case for why God had abandoned Portland.

She took her break at eleven, sitting on an overturned milk crate behind the building with a cup of drip coffee. Her phone buzzed. Jules.

No text — just a screenshot from a website she didn’t recognize. The header read PRIVATE COMPANIONSHIP — PORTLAND METRO AREA and below it: Established professional (F, 40s) seeking a polished, open-minded young woman for a six-month exclusive companionship arrangement. Generous monthly stipend, housing assistance, and wardrobe allowance provided.

Then Jules’s commentary: this is either a serial killer or your rent money. possibly both.

Emory stared at the screenshot. She thought about the -$47.12 in her checking account, the Theory pants that were about to eat her paycheck, and her mother’s text that she couldn’t answer honestly.

She filled out the application during the remaining eleven minutes of her break, sitting on the milk crate with her coffee going cold, and paused on the last question: What are you willing to sacrifice for financial stability?

She typed: I’ve already sacrificed most of the things people sacrifice when they’re broke. What I’m not willing to sacrifice is my honesty or my self-respect. If this arrangement requires either, I’m the wrong person. If it doesn’t, I’m interested in learning more.

She hit submit.

Her phone buzzed at 11:47 PM. A text from an unknown number.

Ms. Sato — your application has been reviewed and selected for an in-person consultation. Please confirm your availability for Friday at 5:00 PM. A car will be provided. — N. Abbasi, Executive Office

She typed: Confirmed. Thank you.

Then she lay back down, pressed her phone to her sternum, and felt the specific, terrifying electricity of a life about to change — for better or worse, richer or poorer, with or without her pride intact.
