Zodiac Academy Spicy Chapters: The Heat Book by Book, Warnings & Why-Choose Answer (2026)

Zodiac Academy spicy chapters don’t work like a single-book guide, because Caroline Peckham and Susanne Valenti turn the heat up gradually across nine books. The short version: the series is 🌶️🌶️🌶️ open door overall, it starts mild in The Awakening with one hookup, gets its first full scene in book two, opens up in book three, The Reckoning, and reaches 🌶️🌶️🌶️🌶️ by book four, Shadow Princess. It’s a bully romance at a magic academy with an enormous ensemble, so it’s for readers who want the slow, vicious build more than wall-to-wall scenes. And no, the main series isn’t a why-choose, whatever the covers and BookTok suggest; that’s the spin-offs. Why now: King’s Hollow and Simon & Schuster have the series in bookstores in new print editions, and book ten, On the Cursed Day of Christmas, arrives November 10, 2026 as a 24-chapter advent-calendar hardcover set after Restless Stars. Below is the spice curve book by book, the key chapters in books one through four, content warnings, comparisons, reading order and a Fractal Enigma bonus scene for readers who did want the why-choose.

Is Zodiac Academy Spicy?

Yes, and it gets spicier as it goes. Book one has a single hookup chapter, books two and three add explicit scenes for both twins, and by book four reader guides rate it four chilies out of five with six spicy chapters. The twins, Tory and Darcy Vega, have just turned eighteen when the series opens, and the academy is for students eighteen and up. The heat is open door but never the point of the book: the Celestial Heirs, the throne and the war take most of the page time.

Zodiac Academy Spicy Chapters List, Book by Book

Chapter numbers come from one reader-compiled guide per book; reviews and plot summaries confirm what happens in each book but not the exact chapter, so every number is “around.” Non-graphic and spoiler-light, but if you haven’t started, skim the couple names at your own risk.

  1. The Awakening (book 1), around Chapter 19: Tory and Caleb, one of the four Heirs bullying the twins, hook up in a classroom. It’s the only real heat in book one and it’s brief. Darcy’s side of the book has a kiss with Seth that ends badly. Two to three chilies.
  2. Ruthless Fae (book 2), around Chapters 23 and 25: The party at the Acrux manor. Tory and Caleb have the series’ first proper sex scene, and Darcy and Orion share the pool kiss readers waited two books for. Three chilies.
  3. The Reckoning (book 3), around Chapters 12 and 13: Darcy and Orion’s first time, the one fans mean when they say “finally.” First full scene for the slow-burn couple. Three to four chilies.
  4. The Reckoning (book 3), around Chapters 23 and 30: The car scene with Darcy and Orion and more of Tory and Caleb’s arrangement. Tory and Darius still haven’t crossed the line. Three to four chilies.
  5. Shadow Princess (book 4), around Chapters 9, 10 and 12: The book opens hot. Darcy and Orion stop pretending (in her room, and in the caverns during the Halloween party), and Tory and Caleb’s beach hookup turns into friends with benefits. Four chilies.
  6. Shadow Princess (book 4), around Chapters 22, 27 and 40: The back half belongs to Tory and Darius, finally: the Shimmering Springs, then the throne room at Christmas. The payoff for the series’ central enemies-to-lovers and the hottest stretch of the first four books. Four chilies.
  7. Cursed Fates (book 5): Darcy and Orion’s relationship goes public in the worst possible way, and Tory turns to Caleb after a rejection that changes everything for her and Darius. We couldn’t confirm chapter numbers for book five from more than one source, so we’ve left them off.

We couldn’t verify chapter-level lists for books five through nine, so they aren’t numbered here; by then the main couples are established and the war plot takes over. The first kiss between Darcy and Orion is the pool in book two; the first full scene in the series is Tory and Caleb in book two; the hottest stretch for most readers is Tory and Darius in Shadow Princess.

The Spice Curve at a Glance

  • Book 1, The Awakening: 🌶️🌶️ one hookup chapter
  • Book 2, Ruthless Fae: 🌶️🌶️🌶️ two spicy chapters, first full scene
  • Book 3, The Reckoning: 🌶️🌶️🌶️ four spicy chapters, Darcy and Orion’s first time
  • Book 4, Shadow Princess: 🌶️🌶️🌶️🌶️ six spicy chapters, Tory and Darius
  • Books 5 to 9: still open door with the established couples; chapter counts not verified

Is Zodiac Academy a Why-Choose?

No. Each twin ends up with one partner. Tory has a long friends-with-benefits arrangement with Caleb while her real story is with Darius, and there’s a lot of mixed-group tension with the four Heirs, which is why it gets shelved next to reverse harem. The why-choose books in the same world are the spin-offs: Ruthless Boys of the Zodiac, set five years before the twins arrive, with spicy chapters from Dark Fae’s single scene up to nine in Warrior Fae, and the Darkmore Penitentiary books. Our guide to why choose vs. reverse harem vs. polyamorous romance explains the labels.

Content Warnings

  • Relentless bullying by the love interests, including a near-drowning and a heroine’s hair cut off without consent
  • Sexual harassment and coercion, including Siren emotional manipulation and Dark Coercion
  • A teacher-student relationship (Darcy and Orion)
  • Physical and emotional abuse, including torture and child abuse in backstory
  • A forced magical bond
  • Graphic violence, war and character deaths
  • Vampire biting, substance use and heavy swearing

Book one’s bullying is the make-or-break point for most readers. If the Heirs’ behavior in The Awakening is too much, the series doesn’t apologize for it quickly.

How Spicy Is Zodiac Academy Compared To…

  • Fourth Wing 🌶️🌶️🌶️🌶️: Similar peak heat, very different spread. Fourth Wing packs three spicy chapters into one book; Zodiac Academy spreads a dozen across four books and two couples.
  • A Court of Thorns and Roses 🌶️🌶️🌶️: About the same arc. Mild first book, the door opens in the middle of the series. Our ACOTAR spicy chapters guide has the Maas version.
  • Quicksilver 🌶️🌶️🌶️🌶️: Callie Hart gets more heat into one book (three full scenes) than Zodiac Academy does in its first three.
  • Ruthless Boys of the Zodiac 🌶️🌶️🌶️🌶️: Same world, hotter and actually why-choose; books three to five have seven to ten spicy chapters each.
  • Haunting Adeline 🌶️🌶️🌶️🌶️🌶️: If what you liked was the bully-romance edge, this is the dark romance end of it, at erotica-level heat and with much harder content.

If You Wanted It Hotter: A Fractal Enigma Bonus Scene

A lot of readers pick up Zodiac Academy hoping Tory won’t have to choose between Caleb and Darius. She does. Isla Wilde wrote the version where nobody has to, and the bonus chapter is the hottest thing on her shelf.

Room for Three — Isla Wilde

Room for Three by Isla Wilde book cover

Lena Hart is thirty-one, broke and nine days from homeless when her college crush, Beckett Shaw, offers her the spare room in his Brooklyn apartment. The catch: the rent is suspiciously low, the ceiling stain looks like a duck, and his roommate, quiet, precise, impossibly steady Andre Morales, makes her feel things she wasn’t prepared to negotiate. Two men who fall first, one woman who doesn’t have to pick. The bonus chapter, “The Anniversary Rule,” is set six months after the ending and starts with a spreadsheet Lena finds open on Andre’s laptop. MFM, extremely explicit, and too hot for Amazon.

FAQ: Zodiac Academy Spicy Chapters

What chapter is the spicy scene in Zodiac Academy?

In book one, The Awakening, it’s around chapter 19 (Tory and Caleb). The first full scene in the series is in Ruthless Fae around chapters 23 to 25, Darcy and Orion’s first time is around chapters 12 and 13 of The Reckoning, and Tory and Darius get together in Shadow Princess around chapters 22 and 27.

How many spicy scenes are in Zodiac Academy?

Roughly thirteen spicy chapters across the first four books: one in book one, two in book two, four in book three and six in book four, with more in the later books.

Is Zodiac Academy dark?

Yes, in the bully-romance sense. The love interests spend book one tormenting the heroines, and the later books add torture, abuse, coercion and war. It’s dark fantasy rather than dark romance; the sex itself is consensual.

Do the sequels get spicier?

Yes. The heat climbs book by book through Shadow Princess, the first one reader guides rate at four chilies, and the door stays open after that. If you want more, the Ruthless Boys of the Zodiac spin-off is hotter and actually why-choose.
