She was the boss’s untouchable wife. She was anything but.

Harper Lane is a twenty-six-year-old junior strategist at a boutique creative agency, hired partly because her best friend’s father owns the firm — and determined to prove she earned her place. She’s hardworking, anxious, and very good at being good. She’s also spent her entire life burying crushes on older women so deep she’s forgotten they exist.

Vivienne Cole is the boss’s wife. A former corporate attorney who traded courtrooms for charity galas, she’s polished, poised, and quietly suffocating in a marriage to a man who treats her like an accessory. She’s also closeted, queer, and hasn’t been touched by someone who actually sees her in over a decade.

When a late-night work crisis turns into a confession, then a kiss, then an affair conducted in secret apartments and hotel rooms and the locked offices of a firm that belongs to Vivienne’s husband — Harper discovers that the “good girl” she’s always been is capable of something reckless, devastating, and real. And Vivienne discovers that the ice queen the world sees is hiding a woman who’s been on fire for twenty years.

But secrets have costs. Harper’s best friend is Vivienne’s stepdaughter. The marriage is crumbling. A private investigator is closing in. And the love they’re building in the dark is about to be dragged into the light — where it will either survive or destroy everything they have.

Chapter One

The elevator smelled like someone else’s ambition—espresso and leather and something aggressively botanical that probably cost more per ounce than Harper’s rent.

She checked her reflection in the brushed steel doors for the fourth time. Blazer: structured, navy, purchased on sale at Nordstrom Rack with a coupon she’d found on Reddit. Hair: blown out within an inch of its life at six a.m. because she’d been too wired to sleep past five. Expression: that of a woman who absolutely, definitely, one hundred percent belonged here and was not at all about to vomit into her new tote bag.

The doors opened on the eleventh floor. Cole & Partners.

Harper stepped out into a space that looked like it had been designed by someone who’d googled “creative agency aesthetic” and then tripled the budget. Exposed brick walls. Polished concrete floors. An accent wall painted the exact shade of deep teal that said we’re artistic but also extremely profitable. Track lighting angled at a reception desk made of reclaimed wood, behind which sat a girl with lavender hair and a nose ring who looked up from her laptop like Harper had interrupted something important.

“Hi. Harper Lane? I’m starting today. Junior strategist.”

The girl—her name tag said PRIYA—blinked at her. “Oh, right. Zoe’s friend.”

There it was. Three words in.

Be good. Harper could do that. Being good was the one thing she’d never failed at.

She found her desk—a clean white surface with a brand-new iMac, a succulent in a ceramic pot shaped like a cat, and a welcome card signed by six people whose handwriting she’d be studying later for personality clues.

Harper set down her bag, sat in her ergonomic chair, and allowed herself exactly five seconds of internal screaming.

She was here. She’d made it. Cole & Partners—twelve-person boutique agency that punched three weight classes above its size, known for prestige branding work with luxury hotels, fashion houses, and nonprofits that had more money than God and needed someone to make their philanthropy look effortless.

By noon, she was deep in mood boards for a sustainable fashion brand, headphones in, finding her rhythm, starting to believe she might actually survive this, when the energy in the office shifted.

She felt it before she saw it—a subtle change in the room’s frequency, like the air pressure dropping before a storm.

The woman walking through the glass doors moved like she’d been designed for a different atmosphere—something with less friction, less gravity. Tall. Cream silk blouse tucked into high-waisted charcoal trousers. A watch that caught the light, gold and thin, the kind you inherited or earned. Hair the color of dark honey.

And the face.

She moved through the office like she owned it. She didn’t. Her husband did.

“That’s Vivienne,” Priya said quietly. “Mrs. Cole.”

Vivienne. The name fit like a key in a lock.

Vivienne paused at Richard’s door and turned. Her gaze passed over the room — and landed on Harper.

“You must be the new hire,” she said. Her voice was low, deliberate, the kind of voice that made you lean in. “Richard mentioned you.”

Harper stood up so fast she bumped her knee on the desk. “Harper Lane. Junior strategist. It’s really nice to meet you, Mrs. Cole.”

Vivienne took her hand. Her grip was firm and warm and dry, and her fingers lingered for exactly the right amount of time, which was also exactly too long.

“Vivienne. Please.” A smile that was really just a rearrangement of the mouth—polite, contained, giving nothing away.

“Good.” Vivienne released her hand. “Excitement is useful. It sustains you through the parts that aren’t exciting. Which, I should warn you, is most of them.”

She turned and disappeared into Richard’s office. The door closed.

Harper sat back down. Looked at her hand. It was tingling.

Her hand tingled for the next forty-five minutes.

She texted Zoe.

Harper: survived day one. your dad’s agency is terrifyingly cool

Zoe: did you meet anyone fun?

Harper: your stepmom came in for a meeting

Zoe: 🙄🙄🙄 lemme guess. power suit, heels, made everyone feel like they were being graded?

Zoe: babe i love you but she is not a real person she is a lifestyle brand in human form

She put her phone down and stared at the dark windows. Her reflection stared back—a twenty-six-year-old woman in a blazer she’d bought with a coupon, thinking about a woman she had no business thinking about.

She pulled out her phone. Opened Google. Typed Vivienne Cole attorney.

A profile at a white-shoe law firm—Vivienne had been a partner-track corporate attorney specializing in intellectual property before stepping back to consulting five years ago. Awards. Keynote speeches. An interview with the headline “Vivienne Renard Cole on Navigating Power Structures in Male-Dominated Firms.”

This was not a trophy wife. This was not a lifestyle brand in human form.

This was a caged lion.

And Harper—stupid, reckless, doomed Harper—wanted to know what she looked like set free.

She lay in the dark for a long time, staring at the ceiling, telling herself it meant nothing.

It meant nothing.

She was just tired.

It was just a first day.

It was just a handshake.

The Study — A scene TOO HOT for Amazon

Vivienne finishes her novel. Harper reads the last chapter — a sex scene written from Vivienne’s perspective. Then she closes the laptop and says: “Show me.” What follows is the most meta, intimate, devastating scene in the series — two women making love on top of the manuscript about them making love.
