She just wanted to practice dating. She didn’t plan on catching feelings for the teacher.
Hannah Price is a chronically single, socially anxious data analyst who freezes every time a date gets physical. Two years after a boyfriend who criticized her body during sex, her nervous system has learned to check out the moment anyone touches her. She’s tried therapy, breathing exercises, and three different dating apps. Nothing works. She’s starting to think she’s broken.
Lexi Morales is the confident, out lesbian designer at Hannah’s office — warm, charismatic, and the kind of woman who makes everyone feel seen. When Hannah, three glasses of wine deep at after-work drinks, half-jokingly asks Lexi to be her “practice girlfriend” for one month — teach her how to date, how to flirt, how to be touched without dissociating — Lexi says yes. Against her better judgment. Because she’s already been in love with Hannah for a year and this is the only way she can have her.
What starts as structured lessons — practice dates, practice kissing, practice sex — becomes an addiction neither of them can control. Hannah discovers she’s bisexual, discovers her body works perfectly when she’s with the right person, and discovers that the woman teaching her to date is the only one she wants to date. Lexi discovers that being the teacher is easy — it’s being the one who stays that terrifies her.
When Lexi’s ex shows up to plant poison, a job offer arrives from across the country, and Hannah makes a mistake that threatens to prove every one of Lexi’s fears right — they’ll have to decide whether “practice” was ever the right word for what they’ve been doing. And whether the real thing is worth the risk of saying it out loud.

Chapter One: Worst Date Ever
The chicken was dry.
That was the thought lodged in Hannah Price’s brain while Tyler—or was it Tyler? She’d already forgotten and they were forty minutes into dinner—talked about his fantasy football league with the kind of passion most people reserved for religion or really good oral sex.
Neither of which Hannah had experienced lately. Or ever, if she was being honest about the second one.
He’s cute, he has a job, and he used a full sentence in his bio. That’s husband material in this economy.
Hannah took a sip of wine and tried to focus. The problem wasn’t Tyler. Tyler was perfectly fine. The problem was the thing that was already starting—the low hum at the base of her skull, the slight cotton-wool feeling behind her eyes, the way her body was beginning to feel like a suit she was wearing rather than something she lived inside.
First the hum. Then the distance—the sense that she was watching herself from three feet to the left, a security camera pointed at a woman who looked like her. Then the freeze.
By the time Tyler paid the bill, the cotton-wool feeling had spread through her whole body. They reached her car—a ten-year-old Civic with a dent in the passenger door—and Tyler leaned in to kiss her goodnight.
And Hannah went away.
Not physically. She was still standing there. But the person standing there wasn’t her—it was the shell, the suit, the security-camera version of Hannah Price who could receive a kiss without feeling it because she’d already checked out.
She put her forehead on the steering wheel and cried. The ugly kind—snot and mascara and little hiccupping gasps that fogged up the windshield.
Monday morning. Calloway & Marsh Marketing. Hannah sat at her desk staring at a spreadsheet, puffy-eyed, wearing her biggest cardigan, trying to be invisible.
“Morning, Price.”
Lexi Morales leaned against her cubicle, travel mug in hand, looking like she’d walked out of one of those effortlessly cool Instagram accounts. Dark jeans, a soft olive flannel with the sleeves rolled up to show the botanical tattoo sleeve on her left arm, hair in loose waves that somehow looked both messy and intentional.
When she got back to her desk, there was a coffee on it. Oat milk latte. Her order. Next to it, a yellow Post-it note in Lexi’s gorgeous half-print, half-cursive handwriting:
Bad dates build character. You have plenty already. — L
Something warm settled in her chest, right behind her sternum, and she pressed her hand against it like she could hold it in place.
At lunch, Lexi appeared again. “Taco truck. You in?”
“I brought lunch.” Hannah gestured at the sad desk salad.
“That’s not lunch. That’s penance.” Lexi plucked a wilted spinach leaf from the container. “This leaf has given up on life, Hannah. Don’t let it take you down with it.”
Hannah laughed. An actual, real laugh—the first one since Friday.
Lexi held the door open for her on the way back. Her hand landed briefly on the small of Hannah’s back—a light, barely-there touch. Hannah felt it for the rest of the day.
She sat at her desk, staring at the spreadsheet she still hadn’t finished, and pressed her fingertips to the spot on her back where Lexi’s hand had been.
She was a very good liar, at least when it came to herself.
