Chapter One: Six Feet Two in the Wrong Place
I arrived at Breakwater Pavilion ninety minutes before anyone expected me because I’d rather stretch alone in an empty arena than sit in a team-arranged apartment eating protein oatmeal and pretending I wasn’t terrified.
I heard the ball before I saw her. The rhythmic thud of a volleyball being set against a wall. Controlled. Precise. I turned toward the sound and saw Daniela Reyes for the first time in person.
She was shorter than I expected. What I didn’t know from film was the silver. A streak of it at her right temple. Not gray—silver, actual metallic silver.
“You’re early,” she said.
“You’re early to the wrong position.”
“Better,” she said. Then she walked away.
I stood in my corrected position and thought: This is going to be a very long season.
“Combination plays,” Marisol said. “Avery, you’re running with Dani. Let’s see the chemistry.”
There was no chemistry.
“Higher,” I said. “I need the ball higher.”
“You need better timing.”
“Then adjust faster.”
“Your starting position is still wrong.” She stepped behind me. Close. “Feet.” She placed her hands on my ankles. “Hips.” Both hands on my hips. My breath caught. “Shoulder angle.” One hand pressed flat between my shoulder blades.
“Are you injured?” she asked.
“No. Distracted.”
“Distraction is a positioning error. Fix it on your own.”
She walked away. I stood in my corrected starting position and watched her leave. The silver in her hair. The confident walk.
It’s not attraction, I told myself, with less conviction.
“Fuck,” I said, to nobody.
