She can control the entire wedding. She cannot control what the security chief does to her.
Mara Vance has spent her life being the reliable one. She manages crises before anyone notices them. That talent made her an exceptional chief of staff. It also made her the only possible maid of honor for her younger sister Lila, a beloved actor whose celebrity wedding has attracted photographers, obsessive fans, and one anonymous threat serious enough to require a private security team.
Tessa Quinn is the forty-six-year-old former executive-protection specialist leading the security operation. Silver at her temples, an unreadable expression, and absolutely no interest in Mara’s color-coded wedding binder. Worst of all, she keeps calmly telling Mara no.
Their hostility lasts until Tessa finds Mara alone in a service corridor, shaking from exhaustion. Tessa does not touch her without asking. She gives her choices, waits for answers, and quietly tells her she has done enough. The praise almost breaks Mara.
Tessa offers a proposition with strict boundaries: during the wedding week, Mara may ask Tessa to take control privately. Nothing happens without negotiation. Mara may stop everything with one word. Mara chooses violet.
Their arrangement begins as pressure relief. It becomes increasingly intimate, possessive, and emotionally dangerous. The wedding ends in seven days. The arrangement is supposed to end with it. But Mara has spent her life making everyone else’s happy ending possible. Tessa may be the first woman who expects her to choose one for herself.

Chapter One: The Woman with the Binder
The ranunculus were wrong.
I knew they were wrong before the delivery van finished reversing into the south kitchen courtyard, because I could see the tissue paper through the rear windows and tissue paper meant wholesale filler stock, not the custom garden-rose arrangement I’d confirmed in three separate emails, two phone calls, and one passive-aggressive text chain with a florist named Derek.
I answered the phone on the second ring while walking through the east garden with a clipboard, a binder, and the specific kind of calm that meant someone was about to have a very bad afternoon.
“Derek. I’m looking at your van.”
“Mara, hey, listen—”
“I’m looking at your van and I can see tissue paper through the windows and we both know what tissue paper means.”
I did have three backup florists in the binder. I also had backup caterers, backup string quartets, backup weather contingencies, and a color-coded spreadsheet of every person who would be on this property for the next week, cross-referenced by dietary restriction, known grudge, and likelihood of causing a scene at the reception.
The binder was magnificent. I’d been building it for eleven months.
This was Bellweather House. Restored Gilded Age mansion in the Hudson Valley, ninety-seven acres of manicured grounds. The kind of place where you paid an obscene amount of money to pretend the twenty-first century hadn’t happened and then spent the entire week fighting with the Wi-Fi.
The threatening messages had started six weeks ago. Anonymous. The fifth referenced the venue by name—the venue that hadn’t been publicly announced. The sixth said the wedding would not happen as planned.
Lila’s manager hired a security team. I would handle it. I would handle everything. Because that was what I did.
Our mother used to say I was the strong one. She meant it as a compliment. It became a life sentence.
I found the security operations room on the ground floor of the east wing. Now it contained three monitors, a radio system, a wall-mounted whiteboard with a property map, and a woman I had not been prepared for.
She stood with her back to the door, studying the property map. Tall. Five-eleven, maybe six feet in the boots. Broad shoulders beneath a tailored black suit jacket. Dark hair cropped close, and at the temples—silver. Not gray. Silver, like a deliberate accent, like a streak of winter through something dark and precise.
She was, objectively and inconveniently, the most striking woman I had ever seen. I hated that I noticed. I noticed anyway.
“Tessa Quinn.” Her voice was low, unhurried. “You must be the maid of honor.”
“Mara Vance. You changed my delivery access.”
“Your logistics are thorough,” she said. “They’re also subordinate to the security assessment.”
She took my key like it was nothing. Like I was someone who needed permission to move through my own sister’s wedding.
The problem—the real problem—was that some small, treacherous part of me had liked it. The certainty. The way she hadn’t flinched when I pushed. The way she’d looked at me like I was worth paying attention to even while she was telling me no.
I fell asleep still gripping the access card.
