He asked his roommate to teach him how to be better in bed. He wasn’t ready for how good the lesson would feel.
Ethan Cole is a mess. Four months after his ex told their entire friend group he was “sweet but forgettable in bed,” he can’t stay hard, can’t stay present, and can’t stop failing with every woman he brings home. His body has checked out. His confidence is in ruins. And his roommate hears everything through the thin apartment walls.
Luca Reyes is a freelance graphic designer who works from home, cooks like a professional, and has been quietly cataloging his straight roommate’s disasters for eight months. He already knows the truth before Ethan does: it’s not lack of skill. It’s lack of alignment.
When Ethan half-jokingly asks “what would you do differently?” Luca answers: “I could show you.” What starts as a lesson in presence becomes something neither of them can control — and everything Ethan thought he knew about himself begins to unravel.
But Luca has his own scars. A two-year relationship with a man who kept him hidden taught him the cost of being someone’s secret. He’ll give Ethan his body, his patience, even his heart — but he won’t be loved in the dark. If Ethan wants this, he has to want it in daylight.

Chapter One: The Problem
Her name was Jess, and she tasted like vodka cranberry, and Ethan was thinking about his credit card statement.
This was the problem. Not Jess. Jess was great—a graphic designer from Bushwick with a lip ring and a laugh that had made him lean in at the bar. But somewhere between carrying her over his threshold and landing on his mattress, his brain had simply left. And now, while a perfectly attractive woman ran her tongue along his neck, Ethan Cole was running mental arithmetic on his Spotify subscription.
She pulled back. “You good?”
“Yeah. Great.” He kissed her again. Harder this time, like effort could manufacture what wasn’t there.
He went soft. Not gradually—his body simply opted out, decisively and without consultation, like a computer entering sleep mode mid-task.
“It’s fine. Seriously. It happens.” She touched his face, and the tenderness was so much worse than annoyance would have been.
She got dressed with practiced efficiency. “Goodnight, Ethan.” The front door closed. The deadbolt turned. And Ethan was lying on his back staring at the ceiling, his chest filled with the specific, granular humiliation of a twenty-six-year-old man whose body had, once again, refused to do the one thing it was designed for.
Four months since Megan. Four months since his ex told their friend group he was sweet but forgettable in bed. Since then: a parade of Hinge dates and bar pickups that ended in the same empty bedroom.
From the kitchen: the quiet sound of a cabinet opening. Luca was up. Of course Luca was up. And he knew, with the quiet precision that characterized everything about him, exactly what had happened.
Ethan pulled on a T-shirt and walked out. Luca was at the counter, laptop open, tea in hand, headphones around his neck. “There’s leftover pad thai. Behind the oat milk.”
“I’m not hungry.”
“Early night,” Luca said. Not a question. He always knew.
Ethan went back to his room. Lay on the bare mattress. Stared at the ceiling. Through the wall, the faint tap of Luca’s fingers on his keyboard—steady, unhurried, confident—and for reasons he didn’t examine, the sound was the only thing that let him sleep.
