Chapter One: Match Point

The thing about playing the best woman in the world is that everyone looks at you like you’ve already lost.

The umpire hadn’t called time yet and I could feel it—the weight of twelve thousand people who’d bought tickets to watch Naomi Grant win.

They weren’t wrong to think it. My ranking said twenty-three. Hers said one. The best on the planet, and she’d held that spot for so long that younger players talked about her the way you’d talk about weather. Permanent. Unavoidable. Something you dressed for but couldn’t change.

Across the net, Naomi Grant waited.

She just stood there. Tall and still and so composed that she looked like she’d been carved out of the baseline. White dress, clean lines, long braid pulled tight against her skull, dark skin gleaming under the stadium lights. Her face gave away absolutely nothing—fifteen years of showing the world a locked door and daring anyone to knock.

I’d been knocking all match.

Third set. The decider. 5-4, my serve, and for the first time in two and a half hours, I saw something on her face. Not fear. But attention. Real attention. The kind you give something that’s stopped being a nuisance and started being a threat.

I liked that look on her. I liked it a lot.

I tossed the ball, cracked a serve down the T—128 miles per hour. She barely got a racket on it. I drove a forehand crosscourt and charged the net. She tried to pass me down the line. I read it. Stretched, lunged, and punched a volley into the open court.

It landed clean.

I beat Naomi Grant.

Then my body did something my brain didn’t authorize. I turned toward the crowd and raised my right hand—index and middle fingers extended, palm out. Naomi’s gesture. The signature celebration she’d used after every major win for a decade.

I didn’t plan it. My arm just went up and my fingers just spread and for exactly the amount of time it took me to realize what I was doing, I was Naomi Grant.

The stadium screamed.

At the net, she took my hand. Held it one second longer than the standard handshake. Her thumb pressed briefly into the inside of my wrist where my pulse was hammering.

“You played well,” she said.

“I like your celebration. Thought I’d try it on.”

Something flickered behind her eyes. Not anger, exactly. Something hotter than anger and twice as dangerous.

She released my hand, turned, and walked off the court without another word.

I was in so much trouble.

In the press room, a journalist asked about the gesture. I leaned into the microphone.

“I think I wanted to know what it felt like. To be Naomi Grant for ten seconds. She’s been the standard my entire career.”

I should have stopped there.

“Also,” I heard myself say, “she looks even better when she’s angry. Just an observation.”

The room erupted. The clip went viral. And somewhere out there, Naomi Grant was watching it.

I was serious. I was the most serious I’d ever been about anything. I just happened to be serious in a way that looked, from the outside, like recklessness.

That was fine. Let them think that. They’d figure out the truth eventually.

Everyone did.
