She could get any woman into bed. She had no idea how to earn one real date.

Cleo St. James owns one of Manhattan’s most exclusive women-centered nightclubs and has slept with enough beautiful women to become part of the club’s mythology. She knows how to recognize attraction, create tension, and leave before anyone asks for more.

Then documentary filmmaker Maren Kovács refuses her.

Maren is not shy, prudish, or intimidated. She’s demisexual — she doesn’t experience meaningful sexual desire without trust and emotional connection. Cleo has never learned how to build intimacy without using sex as the foundation.

When Cleo asks what it would take to earn one date, Maren gives her a challenge: Thirty days. No seduction. No touching beyond what Maren initiates. No using the club, money, or reputation to impress her.

Cleo expects restraint to make Maren want her. Instead, being truly observed strips away every defense she possesses. By the time Maren decides she trusts Cleo enough to cross the physical line, the legendary womanizer is already more emotionally exposed than she has ever been. And once their restraint breaks, neither woman is prepared for the intensity.

Chapter One: The Woman Everyone Watches

I’ve been filming dying spaces for six years, so I know what a heartbeat sounds like when the body doesn’t realize it’s failing.

The basement jazz club in Detroit that smelled like mildew and genius. The lesbian bar in San Francisco where the bathroom graffiti dated back to 1987 and the landlord’s demolition crew dated back to last Tuesday. The drag cabaret in New Orleans that survived three hurricanes and couldn’t survive a rent increase.

Saints is different. Saints is not dying. Saints is the one that lived.

I arrive at nine, two hours before doors. The cab drops me at a loading entrance on a side street in the Meatpacking District, where a steel door is propped open with a cinder block and a woman in a black polo is hauling cases of champagne from a delivery truck.

The hallway smells like industrial cleaner and roses. The combination shouldn’t work, but it does — practical underneath, beautiful on top. I make a mental note. That’s going to be the thesis of this film, if I’m lucky enough to find it: the labor beneath the glamour.

I step through a set of heavy curtains and into the main room, and my breath catches.

Saints occupies a converted 1930s theater, and whoever did the renovation understood that the bones were the point. Deep green walls the color of old money rise to a ceiling studded with art deco plasterwork. Velvet booths line the perimeter in shades of emerald and black. A long brass bar runs the length of the east wall, already gleaming under warm amber light.

It’s gorgeous. It’s also, at 9 PM with the house lights up and no crowd, visibly imperfect. I spot water stains near the south exit. A velvet cushion with a repaired seam. Electrical tape on a speaker cable. The glamour is real, but it’s maintained, not effortless. Someone is working very hard to keep this room alive.

Cleo St. James crosses the room like she was born in the center of it.

She’s tall — five ten, maybe five eleven in those shoes — and the first thing I register is the movement. Long stride, unhurried, weight settled low in her hips. She doesn’t rush. She doesn’t scan the room to see who’s watching. She already knows who’s watching. Everyone is watching.

A black tuxedo jacket, perfectly tailored, over what appears to be nothing but a silk camisole in a shade of champagne that makes her skin glow. A single gold chain that catches the light each time she turns her head. No visible bra. The jacket is cut to make that obvious without making it obscene.

She is, objectively, one of the most striking women I have ever seen. I note this the way I’d note exceptional architecture or unusual light. It’s a fact. It creates no heat.

I keep filming.

She reaches my booth and leans one hand on the table. “You’ve been filming me for twenty minutes. Usually women introduce themselves before becoming obsessed.”

“I’m filming the club. Not your mythology.”

“It costs everything,” she says. Then catches herself, laughs, shakes her head. “See? Even my honesty sounds rehearsed. You’re going to be a problem, aren’t you?”

“I’m a filmmaker. We’re always a problem.”

She lives above the music. Above the crowd. Above all those women who look at her like she’s the most exciting thing in the room. I wonder if any of them have ever seen her on a ladder at noon.

Cleo St. James is not real to me yet. She is a gorgeous, fascinating surface, and my camera and I are going to spend the next thirty days figuring out what’s behind it.

Whether my body ever decides to get involved is a separate question, and one I’ve learned not to rush.
