She said “I can’t” at the altar. Then she took her maid of honor’s hand and walked out.

Evelyn Hart is four days away from marrying a man she doesn’t love — and the woman she does love is standing right next to her in a bridesmaid dress, pretending everything is fine. She’s spent years saying yes to the safe life: the good fiancé, the beautiful venue, the respectable future. Underneath, she’s exhausted by her own performance.

Mara Quinn has been Evelyn’s best friend since college. She’s also been in love with her for nine years — quietly, furiously, and with zero intention of ever saying so. She agreed to be maid of honor because saying no would have revealed everything. Now she’s trapped at a five-day destination wedding, sharing a cottage with the bride, watching Evelyn perform the role of happy fiancée while something behind her eyes is screaming.

The wedding week becomes a pressure cooker. Every shared room, every late-night conversation, every accidental touch pulls the truth closer to the surface. When Evelyn finally breaks — at the altar, in front of everyone — Mara is the one who takes her hand and walks her out. What comes after is not just an escape from a wedding. It’s the beginning of the life Evelyn was too afraid to choose.

Chapter One

The vineyard was the kind of beautiful that made Evelyn want to scream.

Rolling hills striped with grapevines in perfect rows. A stone lodge draped in climbing roses. Gravel paths that wound through gardens so meticulously maintained they looked artificial, each flower angled toward the Sonoma sun like it had been art-directed.

Linden Grove Estate. Where, in four days, she would marry Daniel Reeves.

Evelyn stood at the edge of the parking circle with her suitcase handle digging into her palm and tried to feel something appropriate. Excitement. Joy. The fizzy, champagne-bubble anticipation that brides were supposed to feel when they arrived at their wedding venue.

Instead, she felt like she was checking into a very expensive prison.

Stop it. She adjusted her sunglasses and pulled her shoulders back. She was tired. That was all. The drive up from the city had been long, she hadn’t been sleeping well, and wedding logistics had eaten the last three months of her life. Any bride would be frazzled. Any bride would feel this low hum of dread vibrating beneath her ribs.

Any bride.

“Miss Hart?” A young man in a Linden Grove polo appeared beside her, already reaching for her bags. “Welcome. We’ve got your cottage ready — Cottage Four, just past the rose garden. I can take you over whenever you’re set.”

“Thank you.” She gave him the smile she’d been perfecting since childhood — warm, poised, grateful. The one that made people trust her, confide in her, believe she had everything under control. “I’m actually waiting for someone. She should be here any minute.”

She.

Evelyn’s stomach did something complicated at the word. She checked her phone. Two texts from her mother about the florist. One from Daniel: Made it to the lodge. Your mom’s already rearranging centerpieces. Pray for me. A laughing emoji. A heart.

She typed back a heart and put her phone away.

Then she heard the car.

It was a dark green Subaru with a cracked windshield and a parking ticket still tucked under the wiper — unmistakably Mara’s. It pulled into the circle too fast, gravel spitting under the tires, and parked at an angle that would have given the valet an aneurysm.

The door opened, and Mara Quinn stepped out.

Three months. It had been three months since Evelyn had seen her, the longest gap in their twelve-year friendship…

Evelyn and Mara come home from Jess’s wedding, still in their dresses, champagne on their breath and confetti in their hair. What happens next involves the couch, some very expensive lingerie, and the kind of explicit, joyful, deeply intimate scene that Amazon’s content guidelines can’t handle.
