Tropes: Maid of Honor x Bride’s Sister, Age Gap, Bi Awakening, Forced Proximity, Wedding Romance, Grumpy/Sunshine, Secret Relationship, One Night Stand, Praise Kink, Ice Queen

She was supposed to keep the bride out of trouble. She slept with her sister instead.

Lily Monroe is the maid of honor, the party planner, the woman holding everything together. She’s organized the bachelorette weekend down to color-coded penis straws and scheduled bathroom breaks. The one thing she didn’t plan for? Victoria Hale.

Tori is the bride’s older sister—fifteen years older, terrifyingly composed, and the kind of woman who uses coasters in hotel rooms and walks in heels like she was born in them. She’s here to make sure her baby sister’s wedding goes smoothly. She is not here to hook up with the twenty-four-year-old maid of honor after too much tequila.

They do it anyway.

One bachelorette-night mistake becomes a “never again” pact—which lasts approximately forty-eight hours before they’re sneaking kisses in stairwells, stealing hours in hotel suites, and pretending that the bride won’t notice her sister and her best friend generating enough tension to set off the smoke detectors.

For Lily, it’s a sexual awakening she never saw coming—and the first time anyone has made her feel like she’s worth being slow with. For Tori, it’s the terrifying realization that she’s falling for someone she told herself she couldn’t have.

The wedding is in five days. The secret is getting harder to keep. And the only thing more dangerous than a one-night mistake is realizing it was never a mistake at all.

Chapter One: Party Planner from Hell

The penis straws were the wrong shade of pink.

I stood in the lobby of the Langham Hotel holding a box of bachelorette supplies and staring at two hundred cocktail straws shaped like dicks, all of which were bubblegum pink instead of the rose-gold I’d ordered three weeks ago with a handwritten note that said PLEASE MAKE SURE THESE MATCH THE SASHES. The sashes were perfect. The straws were an abomination. And the bachelorette party started in four hours.

“These are fine,” I whispered to myself, shoving them back in the box. “No one’s going to notice the dick straws don’t match the sashes. You’re not insane. You’re a professional.”

I was not a professional. I was a twenty-four-year-old social media coordinator who’d spent six hundred dollars of her own money on a bachelorette weekend for her best friend because she didn’t know how to say no to anyone, ever, and also because Hailey Hale was the kind of person you’d sell a kidney for without being asked.

The elevator dinged behind me and I pivoted with my box of mismatched obscenities, nearly taking out a bellhop.

“Sorry! So sorry. I have—these are—it’s for a party.” I flashed him a manic grin. He looked at the box of plastic penises and decided not to engage. Smart man.

Suite 1412. I’d booked the corner suite because it had a living room, a wet bar, a balcony with a city view, and enough floor space to play Pin the Junk on the Hunk, which was a game I’d found on Etsy at two in the morning during a planning spiral and now could not return. The room cost more per night than my rent. I’d put it on a credit card I was trying not to think about and told myself it was an investment in friendship.

Decorations went up fast. I’d practiced the balloon arch in my apartment, which had resulted in a noise complaint from my neighbor and a latex allergy scare, but the technique was solid. Streamers. Confetti. A banner that read LAST FLING BEFORE THE RING in cursive script. I hung it over the wet bar and stood back to assess.

Cute. Festive. Exactly the right amount of trashy elegance. Hailey was going to love it.

Hailey: Lily I’m so excited I think I’m going to throw up. Is that normal?? Also did Tori text you?

My thumb hovered over the keyboard. Tori. As in Victoria Hale. As in the bride’s older sister. As in the woman who’d shaken my hand at Hailey’s engagement party with a grip that could crush walnuts and a stare that made me forget the English language.

The second time was the engagement party, six months ago. She’d arrived late, alone, in a black dress that fit her like a threat. She’d given a toast so dry and perfect that I’d laughed so hard I’d snorted champagne, and she’d looked at me across the room with one raised eyebrow and the ghost of a smile and I’d thought: Oh.

Just oh. No follow-up. Just a soft internal detonation I’d filed under admiration because that was a safer word than whatever was actually happening in my chest.

I looked at the pile of sashes on the table. I’d made one for Tori that said BIG SISTER ENERGY.

She was going to hate it. I was going to make her wear it anyway.

Then the suite door opened and Tori walked in. Walked in is an understatement. Tori didn’t walk into rooms. She occupied them. She altered their gravitational field. She was wearing a dark red dress that stopped just above the knee, structured at the shoulders, with a neckline that was technically modest and somehow the sexiest thing I’d ever seen.

“You planned all this?” she asked.

“With bathroom breaks scheduled.”

“You scheduled bathroom breaks.”

“Efficiency is sexy,” I said, and then immediately wanted to walk into the ocean because why the fuck had I said the word sexy to this woman.

Tori looked at me for one beat longer than necessary. “I suppose it can be.”

She moved past me to pour herself a drink, and I stood there with my cheeks on fire, wondering if I’d just flirted with the bride’s sister or had a stroke.

I caught Tori’s eye on the way out the door. She’d put on a leather jacket over her dress and it was deeply, aggressively unfair how good she looked. Like a woman who’d break your heart and you’d write her a thank-you note.

“I’m not a party person,” she said. “But I’m here for Hailey. That’s enough.”

“What if you were also here for you?”

“Is this the part where you tell me to loosen up and live a little?”

“God, no. You’re a grown woman, I’m not going to tell you how to have fun.” I grinned. “I’m just going to be so much fun that you can’t help yourself.”

I sat down, buckled in, and looked out the window at the city lights and told myself firmly that I was going to have a great time, keep Hailey safe, and absolutely not develop a crush on the bride’s forty-year-old sister over the course of a bar crawl.

How hard could that be?
