The first notification arrived at 6:47 a.m., which meant someone at Northstar House had been thinking about my unfinished manuscript before they’d finished their coffee.
That was never a good sign.
I rolled onto my stomach and pressed my face into the pillow, one eye cracked toward the phone glowing on my nightstand like a tiny judgmental sun. The screen was already stacked with alerts—email, text, email, Instagram DM, email, email, email—a digital tower of people who needed things from the version of Poppy Lane who had her shit together.
That version of me had last been seen approximately four months ago.
I reached for the phone with the enthusiasm of someone picking up a dead mouse by the tail, and started scrolling.
