She bet she could seduce the maid of honor. She never considered the maid of honor might win.
Vesper Bellamy has seduced women at enough weddings to become a family warning. For her cousin’s extravagant coastal celebration, she receives one strict instruction: stay away from the bridal party.
Then the bride makes a bet.
Vesper has five days to make the elegant, painfully responsible maid of honor break a wedding rule, admit she wants a woman, and kiss Vesper first.
Clara Fenwick is supposedly the safest possible target. She is thirty-four, sensible, impeccably organized, and straight. At least, that’s what everyone assumes.
Clara overhears the wager — and decides not to expose it. She has spent years wondering what she might want from a woman. Vesper is experienced, shameless, and temporary enough to make exploration feel safe. Letting the notorious flirt believe she’s in control might even be entertaining.
But Vesper’s practiced seduction becomes dangerously sincere, while Clara proves far less innocent than anyone imagined. Soon the wager no longer feels like a game.
Unfortunately, it is still a secret.
When Clara discovers that her first real experience with a woman began as someone else’s entertainment, Vesper must do the one thing she has avoided through every casual affair: stop performing, tell the whole truth, and remain long enough to be judged by it.

Chapter One
I have been at Pendower House for six hours, and I have already prevented a florist from quitting, a bride from hyperventilating, and a mother-of-the-bride from committing what would likely be classified as aggravated verbal assault.
It is not yet four o’clock.
The seating chart is wrong. Not slightly wrong — catastrophically wrong, in the way that suggests someone copied the draft version instead of the final, which means Odette’s university friends are seated with her mother’s book club and her ex-boyfriend is at the head table directly beside the groom’s recently divorced father, who will absolutely take it as a seating arrangement with romantic implications.
I fix it in eleven minutes, standing at the reception coordinator’s desk with a pencil and the spreadsheet I built in March. The coordinator, a pleasant woman named Diane who has already developed a slight twitch beneath her left eye, watches me rearrange forty-six guests without consulting anyone.
“You’ve done this before,” she says.
“I’m a forensic accountant,” I tell her. “I spend my professional life finding things that don’t add up.”
She looks at me as though she is not entirely sure I am joking. I am not entirely sure either.
The table linens arrive at half past two. They are ivory. They should be champagne. There is a difference, and it matters, and I know this because Odette sent me fourteen fabric swatches between January and March, each one accompanied by a voice note explaining why the previous shade was wrong. I locate the correct linens in a storage closet behind the ballroom, still wrapped in the supplier’s plastic, apparently delivered two days early and forgotten. I carry them out myself because the setup crew is occupied wrestling a marquee frame into submission on the west lawn, and asking for help would take longer than solving the problem.
This is what I do. I solve problems quietly so that other people can feel as though the world arranged itself on their behalf.
I hear the car before I see it.
A low, unhurried engine sound, the kind that belongs to something European and impractical, growing louder as it winds up the gravel drive. I am on the terrace reviewing the cocktail-hour drink menu with the bartender when the burgundy convertible rounds the final curve and rolls to a stop in front of the main house.
The top is down. The driver does not rush to park. She sits for a moment with her wrist draped over the steering wheel, surveying the estate through dark sunglasses like a woman deciding whether the venue meets her standards.
She steps out of the car, and I understand immediately why Odette warned me.
Vesper Bellamy is not beautiful in the way I expected. I expected polished. Glossy. The kind of beauty that functions as a warning label on an expensive product. And she is those things — but she is also something else. Something sharper.
She is tall. Taller than I expected, even in flat-soled boots, with the narrow hips and defined shoulders of someone who moves through the world as though she is late for something more interesting. Her hair is platinum blonde, cropped short above her ears and pushed back from her forehead, and her eyebrows are dark — nearly black — which creates a contrast that feels almost confrontational. Like her face is making an argument.
She is wearing white. She was specifically instructed not to wear white.
