She needed a fake girlfriend. Margot offered lessons. Neither woman practiced saying goodbye.
Thirty-year-old wedding photographer Wren Calder has spent her life being the agreeable straight daughter, dependable sister, and woman men eventually find “too much.” When her ex-boyfriend announces his engagement five months after dumping her — and turns out to be attending her sister’s destination wedding — Wren panics and claims she’s moved on too.
With Margot. Her thirty-nine-year-old lesbian best friend.
Margot Vale knows pretending to date Wren is a terrible idea. She’s wanted Wren for three years, but Wren is straight, emotionally bruised, and completely unaware of what she does to Margot. Still, Margot agrees to seven days of fake romance on one condition: if they’re going to perform, they’ll rehearse.
Holding hands becomes kissing. Kissing becomes lessons. Lessons become locked doors, ruined sheets, and Wren discovering that she may never have understood what wanting someone felt like before.
But Margot refuses to become an experiment Wren can regret, and Wren must prove that “practice” was only the lie she told before she was brave enough to call it love.

Chapter One: Plus One, Minus Dignity
The thing about photographing other people’s love stories is that you develop an instinct for disaster.
I spotted him through my viewfinder at 7:42 p.m., between a rack of lamb skewer and a champagne tower that the caterer had already begged me not to breathe near. Graham Pike, five months removed from telling me I loved the idea of romance more than I loved him, standing in the doorway of the Prescott Gallery in a sport coat I didn’t recognize, laughing at something the woman beside him said.
New sport coat. New laugh. Same jawline that used to make me feel like I’d won something.
I lowered the camera and did what any self-respecting professional would do: I hid behind a structural column and whispered, “No, no, no, no, no.”
The engagement party was for Avery Prescott and Marco Rivera. I’d booked the gig six weeks ago through Avery’s event planner, a woman named Claudette who communicated exclusively in bullet points and expected every email answered within eleven minutes. The gallery was beautiful — exposed brick, copper pendant lights, a string quartet tucked into the corner playing something that sounded expensive. I was supposed to shoot three hours of candids and two staged couple portraits, collect my check, and go home to eat hummus out of the container while watching a documentary about deep-sea octopuses.
Nowhere in the contract did it say your ex-boyfriend will be here with the woman he’s apparently been seeing since before the sheets were cold.
Graham hadn’t noticed me yet. He was steering the woman — tall, brunette, a structured blazer, sensible heels — through the crowd with his hand on the small of her back. I knew that hand. I knew exactly how much pressure it applied and how little it actually guided you anywhere. He just liked the way it looked.
I pressed my spine against the column and texted Margot.
Wren: Graham is here.
Three dots appeared immediately. Margot was always fast.
Margot: Here where?
Wren: AT THE ENGAGEMENT PARTY I’M SHOOTING.
Margot: Of course he is. What’s he doing?
Wren: Being alive. Having a face. Bringing a DATE.
Margot: Can you leave?
Wren: I’M WORKING.
Margot: Then stop texting me from behind whatever you’re hiding behind and do your job. He’s an ex-boyfriend, not a sniper.
She was right. She was always right, which was one of the more irritating things about Margot Vale in a long list of irritating things that I had chosen to categorize as “endearing.”
I stepped out from behind the column, lifted my camera, and aimed it at the string quartet.
