Chapter One: Keep My Wife Happy
The minibar was stocked with seventeen-dollar water and the kind of artisanal chocolate that existed solely so Fortune 500 executives could feel virtuous about their addictions. Nina Flores knew this because she’d confirmed the minibar contents for three separate suites before her own luggage had left the car.
She knew these things because Adrian Cross did not believe in arriving anywhere without having every possible friction pre-smoothed by someone whose salary he controlled.
The junior suite has a view of the parking structure. Unacceptable. Handle it.
She was always on it. That was the entire architecture of her existence.
Lenora Cross arrived at 7:42 PM, twelve minutes late, which Nina would later learn was deliberate—Lenora did not arrive on anyone else’s schedule.
She was not prepared for Lenora Cross.
The woman who walked through the resort’s glass doors was tall—five-ten at least, even before the heels—with the kind of posture that suggested either a ballet background or a deep, innate understanding of the power of taking up space. Her hair was dark and heavy, streaked with silver she clearly had no intention of coloring. Olive skin. Eyes so dark they looked black in the lobby light.
The hotel staff straightened as she passed. Not because she demanded it—because she occupied a room differently than other people. The air rearranged itself.
“I don’t require managing, Nina. I’ve spent two decades at events like this. I know what they are. I know what my role is supposed to be.” She paused. “You, on the other hand, look like you’ve been running since dawn and no one has bothered to ask you if you’ve eaten.”
“I’m fine.”
“I didn’t ask if you were fine.”
“Does he always speak about you like that?” The lobby lighting caught the silver in her hair, the sharp line of her jaw, the three gold rings as she pressed the elevator button. “As though you’re a piece of equipment he’s lending out?”
“I didn’t ask if it was fine.” The elevator opened. Lenora stepped inside and turned to face her. “I asked if he always does it.”
The doors closed.
Does he always speak about you like that?
Yes. He did.
